This problem just slowly grew over a couple of months. It started with using the RESTART. Several things can happen, but the most common is to click on something on my desktop and get the forever rotating cursor.

Then it spread to cold bootup, and it's happening there almost every time now. Of course, I have to leave windows with the power-off button. When I get the error recovery loading page on start up it ALWAYS starts normally selecting "Start Windows Normally." But I have to wonder how long that will last?

I used the repair disc I made when I first bought the machine (almost 2 years ago), but it said no problems found. So there's where I'm at. I'd rather not reformat unless I absolutely have to, and won't unless the time comes when I can't boot properly at all.

    Any clues would be appreciated.

The no problems found when using a repair disk means there is no software problem.
You have some sort of hardware problem.

Grim. Thank you for the info. I am, however, going to have to shoot the messenger. (grin)
