I have this laptop and after disabling the sata drive was able to load the windows xp home edition. However, I found the sata driver intel 82801 gbm/bhm and tried to load it on but it didnt work. After enabling the sata drive in the bios a blue screen of death comes on. When i disable it i can access the windows i loaded on earlier but that is about it. Cant update it or turn on internet explorer.
I've looked around the site here but cant come up with any solutions. Hopefully someone can assist me, thanks
    Allan C.

You have to SlipStream the SATA drivers into the Windows XP Installation CD using nLite. Instructions for doing so are found here.

Thanks for replying madonah! I found the sata driver 82801 gbm/ghm and when I tried to slipstream it onto cd it wanted inf files and couldn't find the driver so I couldn t load it. Not sure if i'm making any sense to you. lol I seen the tool u wanted me to use to obtain driver but they want money to find it. Maybe that is the only alternative, I don't know.

If you found the correct driver at the HP Support site, you shouldn't have to pay ANYONE for it. Did the driver come as some type of zipped archive and did you decompress it before you tried to slipstream it into the Windows installation with nLite? The .inf file(s) would have been within the decompressed folder.

Out of curiosity, which Service Pack are you running?

I downloaded the Intel Matrix Storage Manager and it expanded to my C drive in a folder named "swsetup". The README files says:

    5. The 'Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility'
must be installed prior to installing the
    Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager.

Also, there's no inf file in the folder, so you wouldn't be able to slipstream. At this point, I'm at a loss as to what to suggest. Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance to you.

I installed windows xp home edition with service pack 3. I managed to get most of the drivers on the computers and updates and even validated windows. But as soon enable the sata hd on the bios it comes up a blue screen. Not sure if it will work in this mode or not but seems to be so far. lol

Can you post the error message that comes up in the BSOD? or even the minidump as a text file attachment? Someone here (like DavidGP) may be able to decipher what's happening and offer a solution or solutions. Unfortunately, I can't or I would.

By the way, your actual model number is dv5230ca. Entering 5230ca turns up a bunch of all-in-one computers.

ya sorry forgot to add the dv in front of 5230ca, anyhow, the error message comes up "STOP: 0x0000007b (0xBA4CF524,0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000" So that's the error message that comes up along with the blue screen.

OK, thanks for posting that information. :)

There are a few people here that understand what those stop errors mean and one of them will be able to assist you further.

    Best of luck! :major

Have you used the f6 option to load drivers during the windows install?

If you have an AHCI driver for your storage device that's when the load it.

Yaa I have tried that and when I load the driver it wont load it because it wants a floppy to write it to and there is no floppy disc on the laptop.

If the file has a .img extension, you can change that extension to .iso and burn it to CD. You'll get a warning about changing file types but it will work because .img files and .iso files are essentially the same — bit for bit copies of the source material. The only difference is .img is for floppies and .iso is for CDs/DVDs.

I don't have a floppy drive on my laptop either and I had to do that for a file I needed (unfortunately, I don't remember which one) and it worked.

Thanks MDonah, It is called a WinImage Self Extractor File and the original file name is wima.sfx.exe So I don't think it can be changed to iso as I don't see any .img extension. I wonder if there is a floppy disc with a usb input? Maybe that would work,:confused

The answer to that is a definite YES! I bought one on ebay for my Dell Precision M70. It's got a USB connection AND it can be put in the modular bay where the NEC ND-6650A DVDRW normally sits.

    Take a look here.
