Can a phishing website get information just from you landing on it while browsing?

  1. I don't readily fill in information, but I'm talking about just landing there.

I have heard that if you "unsubscribe" from a bad e-mail source, you actually play into their hands by conforming your e-mail to them.

Yes, and also can plant a Rootkit, if you have Flash or Java enabled, or use Internet Explorer, it can use ActiveX also to plant baddies.

Yea, that would have to be so. Isn't that technically spyware rather than phishing? I'm wondering if I should add the Visicom / Panda / Lavasoft Phishing Domain blocker. I'm sort of hesitant because I've already had a problem with being blocked from what I think are legitimate sites. For example, ClickBank. That's a huge operation on the Internet. I don't think you can say the whole thing is bad because of some specific bad vendors.

I'm on an old XP computer where I'm stuck with IE8, which is a clunky, bloated monstrosity. It's easy to motivate myself to stay off IE therefore.

I normally use a Mozilla browser with Java and Flash disabled by the wonderful add-on QuickJava.

Just because you are using XP, does not mean that you are stuck with IE. You are able to use Fire Fox, Chrome, Opera. Stop believing what Microsoft keeps spreading as FUD.

Oh, believe me, I only use IE when some link insists on bringing it up. My reference to being stuck with IE8 was about the fact that on XP one is not able to upgrade past IE8. I suppose that is another one of Microsoft's ploys to make one buy a new OS.

No, there is no ply by MS forcing you to purchase a newer version of Windows. As for links asking to bring up IE, that right there can be caused by malware on a site, redirecting you, due to ActiveX.

Do yourself a favor and start using either Firefox or Chrome, and stop using IE. If you ever get tired of Windows, you could always move over to Linux Mint or Ubuntu. You would have to make sure your wifi adapter will work, without having to load the drivers into the package, but that is really easy to do with Mint.

Plus side is, it is a lot easier to deal with than Windows, but you still have issues of stuff like iPods not being able to use iTunes on Linux, unless you can find an older verion of iTunes that will work with Crossover.

At the subject at hand, you can use WOT (Web Of Trust) with IE, and now Adblock Plus is finally out for IE, so you can use it with it, to protect yourself. At work, I run IE with everything turned off for add-on's and extensions, due to we do not need any to use the internal site we use for the unit I work in.

I do have to deal with poorly written Javascript on a Internal website for my job, which can cause large memory leaks. I have noticed is starting to disappear after bringing it to a few of the programmers attention, that IE would grow to over a gig if you left it running all day long, and did not close it half way during the day, to clear out the memory leak.

Everyone has their favorites. I used to be a huge fan of FF, but after they started to hit 23 onwards, it got too bloated, so I switched to Chrome. Plus Chrome can be used cross platform. That means what I do on my laptop, I can do the same on my iPhone, or mirror across the two, or on our iPad.
