Sat blindly looking at the various places this should probably go, but decided on here - and you can move me if need be :-D

One of the speakers on my laptop has decided it doesn't want to work - how can this be fixed (without getting ripped off by some local IT person)?

    Thanking you in advance! :wave

Can you test with external speakers or headphones connected to the headphone socket to see if it's the same?

It's still the same :cry Thinking about it - a while ago it started making 'bitty, crackling' noises when playing music..... Oh PERLEEEEEZE tell me it's not hard/expensive to fix.... ?

It's a notebook, it reads like there's a bad connection or solder joint inside. How confident do you feel?

A pro would probably charge you £30-40 max; maybe somewhere in the region of £15-25 if you dropped it off and collected it.

Many companies offer small external speakers that either clip on top above the screen or set beside the computer. Some are as small as a cell phone and get their power from a USB port.

Since I'm in the US, I'm not sure of the major online retailers in Scotland; however, here's a link to a set on Amazon.com's USA website as an example. Going this route should be less expensive than having the internal ones repaired or replaced.

    Hope this helps. :)

I've done a bit of soldering when helping to make a 'robot' - but there's no way I'd chance doing it inside my precious laptop! And I'd only let a very, VERY clued up person attempt it!

I've only got 2 usb ports on this - one I use for the dongle and the other I have my cooling pad connected into..... :( Amazon is pretty big over here too. I'll put the word out and try get some feedback on any trusted teckie places round here - which is a tad slim as it's miles to the nearest big town/city!

You could try a passive cooler and free up a USB port. I use this

under a laptop and a 2nd one under a netbook.

Sorry - been offline for a few days! Hmmm, do these really work - as in, are you limited as to how long you can be 'switched on' before the pad screams it can stand no more heat, lol?

I'm sorry, but I red through the remarks and I didn't see your responce to the first reply. I think the reason you were asked that question was that if you get the same problem on a set of headphones, it might be the way your Balance is set in the Control Panel. If you responded and I didn't see it, would you repeat your answer? Thanks,

The crystals in the pad absorb the heat and the crystals turn into a gel.
Do they work? I was happy with one that I bought a 2nd one. I don't keep my laptops on for 24 hours straight so I can speak for someone who runs a laptop longer than 10 hours. They work for the time I have them running.

Oh good grief.... :-o I never even THOUGHT to check in the CP......Have just gone there and the one speaker had switched itself off...... ALL these weeks I've had this crackling going on when I've turned the volume up (and it's now at that same volume) and then I lost the sound totally.

I am now the proud owner of 2 fully working speakers!! :-D :cry with happiness!!

A thousand thankyous - I was all set for having to deal with the dodgy IT person who would have tried telling me it was oodles of non-relevant things and conning me out of much needed £.....

I love you guys - this is one very happy bunny here :cloud9

I think with the money I've saved on 'fixing' my speaker, I shall now be buying myself one of these for sure!
