    Hello,

I just registered because I need to ask a question. I've read lots of useful advice from this site, over the years, though.

I'm trying to help a friend (very long distance) clean the crapware off her new laptop. I pointed her to the http://www.majorgeeks.com/content/page/how_to_make_your_computer_run_like_new_in_4_easy_steps.html article, but, apparently she clicked an ad that downloaded a bunch of stuff: "Default tab, free download manager 3.8, Internet helper 3.1 toolbar, my pc backup, pc health kit v 3.2, and search protect by COnduit." She did a restore that seemed to fix the problem.

So...if I wanted to ask for help cleaning off Norton apps and making sure that these items are indeed gone from her PC, would that question go in the malware forum or the software forum?

    Thanks!
    :)

    You're in the right place.

    Do what ExtremeHelper suggested.

I'm glad the Restore point worked for her. We had an individual that had gotten the InternetHelper accidentally installed on his computer and wound up having to wipe his hard drive and re-install Windows becaue InternetHelper comes bundled with other malware that can actually re-install InternetHelper.

Conduit is another malicious program like Babylon. I hope she'll be extra careful in the future.

Hi. I am her idiot friend.

I accidentally downloaded Internet Helper 3.1 toolbar, trying to download iobit uninstaller to uninstall norton. I hit an ad by accident and downloaded it along with "default tab" "free download manage 3.8" "my pc backup" "pc health kit v 3.2" and "search protect by conduit." I restored the computer to a previous date and it seemed to get rid of the others except for "default tab" and "internet helper 3.1 toolbar"

I installed iobit uninstaller and uninstalled both the default tab and internet helper 3.1 but after i restarted the computer, the int helper toolbar was still there. Apparently I used the program's uninstaller, and not the iobit registry scan (i did not see it at the time). I then uninstalled firefox (using the iobit registry scan).

I googled and it's a nasty virus. Because I never used iobit's registry clean feature, I bet it's still around. And now I don't know what to do because it is not showing in my programs and files folder on control panel or in the iobit program.

Being that this is a virus, i'm assuming my problem is not gone.

This is a brand new computer and I fear I've already caused problems. Kaspersky isn't picking anything up, probably because I allowed the download to happen, when I thought I was downloading iobit.

I am not very computer savvy. Any help would be appreciated!

    I am on Windows 8.

Omg. This is what I have! This is a brand new computer! If I have to do anything major, I will have a panic attack.

You now know that you have malware on the computer.

Head over to the Malware Removal Forum and go through Read and Run Me First. The volunteers there will, hopefully, be able to assist you in removing InternetHelper and the rest of the nasties you accidentally installed.

By any chance was the recovery/repair CD/DVD for Windows 8 made or was it included with the computer? If you are unable to remove the malware after your visit to the Malware Removal Forum, you may need to use that CD/DVD to restore Windows 8. The gentleman who had to wipe his hard drive was/is running Windows XP.

I used restore through the computer. It did not help the problem though. I have no CD/DVDs of it. It's all internal.

What is the exact make and model of the computer? Most modern computers have a recovery partition. If that partition wasn't corrupted by the malware, you may be able to restore the computer from that partition or make the CD(s)/DVD(s). There are different methods depending on the make & model of the PC.

I restored once already and it didn't fix it. Am I to assume I am screwed? :(

Not necessarily. Head over to the Malware Removal Forum as linked to in my post #6 and go through the Read and Run Me first.
