Printing a map from PDF?

I downloaded a PDF map from the USGS map site, and unless I use screen capture, I can only print the middle of the map off. Even when I am only showing say the upper left of the map, it will still only print the middle.

Does anyone know how to print the sections I want printed?

Your OS? Your PDF reader for viewing maps? How large are these maps, in pixels or inches? What printer/printer software do you have? Does your printer software have settings for "Page Zoom" or "Scaling Type", as does my Brother printer?

usafveteran, the maps can cover a whole county, or just a small section of a town. Does not matter what OS or what PDF reader, because it does not change how the USGS.gov maps are setup.

As for the OP question, they can highlight and copy a section, then paste into paint.

Well, of course, but I presume they are all the same size regardless of the geographic area represented on the map.

Windows 8 has a Reader app that has very limited functionality. Thus, the reason for the question.

Yes, and I presume that what he was doing. He said mentioned screen capture, so that indicates he was pasting it into Paint or some image editor.

They are actually very large maps USAFVeteran. Think of them as a road map of your state. They can be that large, and if you wish, you can actually order just a small section from USGS, not download the whole state or county map.

As for the Windows 8 Reader app, it is junk, and I have used it, and would never suggest having people use it for anything.

Ctrl+P will bring up your printer's settings.
I downloaded a large pdf map from my state DOT and one of the settings on my computer is to print it as a poster using 4 pages.

Look over all your printer settings to see the other options.

Yes, I agree it's junk. That's why I was wondering whether he might be trying to use it.

Which is why I asked back in reply #2 "How large are these maps, in pixels or inches?" Would be good to have some response here from brahman.

I use W7, and I have no idea.

I did order one, the problem is that they pack all the information on them and they look jumbled. And on the PDF I can choose to get rid of the back ground image which camouflages all my topo lines. AND they cost between 14$-20$, way to much compared to what most maps cost in REI.

I'm wondering if Kinko's can print my map? All they would have to do is open up the map, and un-click the back ground image like I can on my computer........

The Snipping Tool in Windows 7 is more flexible than simply using the PrtScr key or Alt/PrtScr. If you have not discovered Snipping Tool yet, you can find it in the Accessories category on the All Programs menu. I keep it pinned to the taskbar on Win 7 and Win 8.

You have no idea what PDF reader you are using? In other words, when you open one of the maps on your computer, you don't know what software is displaying it for you, right? How can you not know?

Thank you on the Snipping tool USAFVeteran. Those maps are a PITA, is why I understand what the OP is going through. The Snipping Tool should work. If they are using Chrome, the built in PDF reader is as bad as the built in on on Win8. Adobe Reader, Nuance, Foxit should do a better job.

Do you use Adobe Reader? If so, you can use scaling options to print more than just part of the doc.

What is the document size (dimensions)?

They vary depending on the area you are looking at. Most likely the OP was pulling one of the whole county, or multiple grid points, not just a single grid point.

Kinko's or any other print shop would print the map, but it would cost more, or some of them will not even print them, due to they are copyrighted by the USGS, so you may end up better to snip the section you need, or order the map if you are needing this for a long time, and do not want to pull out the tablet or laptop all the time, if out on a site doing some kind of work.

    Lol, you guys are funny.

Thanks Browniz's. I did find a place that will print them. It's $17, worth it in my opinion.

Yeah, we have our moments. $17 is still kind of expensive to me, unless they are laminating. The USGS maps are nice, but like I said before, they are a PITA to print.
