I was told by Avast security my laptop has "reliability errors and over 200 temp files " and needs to be fixed for a nominal fee.Is this a scam?
    I am using Vista.

Sounds like it. Where did you download Avast from?

As far as I know it was from their site. Is there a way to check?

Also how do I check my temp files and how do I clean them up?

    Thanks---JoeU

My post seems to have died. Do I have it posted in the right forum?

    Thanks

TimW, also titled as "Jedi Malware Expert" replied it is probably a scam. What other info do you need?

Apparently you missed my 2nd query:

"As far as I know it was from their site. Is there a way to check?

Also how do I check my temp files and how do I clean them up? "

    Thanks---JoeU

Here is the direct link for Avast Antivirus Free. as far as the temp files, use CCleaner to get rid of them.

    Thank you--thank you:-

I downloaded CCcleaner and ran it. A big difference. I assume I should do this on a regular basis?
I already have Avast free installed, that's how I was alerted to excess files.

I run CCleaner about once a month — shortly after Microsoft update Tuesday. I ran it today, in fact, and it got rid of 308MB of unnecessary files. I also run the registry cleaner part of it periodically but, you've got to make sure to allow it to create a backup of the registry in case there are any problems after it cleans the registry. You'll then be able to restore the registry to it's previous state.

If, in fact, you downloaded Avast from the site I linked to, you've got the real deal. I believe the "nominal fee" is for one of the paid versions of Avast which have the capability of "fixing" the issue you originally reported. The freeware version of Avast won't clear out temp files.

I was curious about the registry. Thanks for the tip. I will run that next.

    Thanks

If it is asking for money, it is a scam.. My guess is that the "Pop-up", did not come from Avast, but was engineered to look like it was.

Another vote for moving to the Malware forum.
