Any XP or other users experiencing inability to find or display updates from the express or custom buttons today Sept. 10? The rest of the site works ok.

Fired up one of the 3 XP computers in the house and I can see and click the Express or Custom Buttons with no problem.

I'll fire up the other two and check. If I don't post, you can assume that those two also had no problems.

Yesterday I got the tray notice to download and install the updates. There were 6 updates for my pc. I clicked download but the process appeared to die. So I went to the Microsoft Update site and each time I click the express install button, the progress bar begins but never completes the display of the updates. The hard drive also begins to speed up and wuauclt.exe runs in the task manager but that's it. Has never behaved like this before.

Resolved. Yesterday's updates download finally appeared today in the system tray as ready for installation. It's as if the downloaded updates were 'trapped' somewhere and the tray notice wouldn't reappear so I could proceed with final installation and restart. Thanks for the replies.

I had similar problems and it got worse. Microsoft Update would not work at all. Was up all night trying to fix it.
The other thing was that svchost.exe got pined at 99% CPU activity, with 100% total. Couldn't hardly do a thing.

I tried many things, but here is what finally worked.

Download Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.2
You will have to scroll down to see MBSASetup-x86-EN.msi which is the 32-bit version. 64-bit versions are at the top.

Install from Add or Remove Programs
    Before you run the program:
    • make sure the server service is running - it's required
    • if you are using Avast anti-virus, you have to temporarily turn Off the Web Shield so that MBSA can download the Security
      Update information

I also had Microsoft Update disabled (temporary switch to Windows Update) and turned Off Automatic Updates.
That was to get rid of the svchost lockup. You may not have to do that.

    When you run MBSA:
You don't need Advanced Update Services options

When the scan has finished, you'll see a report.
Under the heading Security Update Scan Results you will see some links for Result Details
That link will open another window showing the missing security updates.

I had to find and then download each of them separately and then install each separately.
These are the one I had to do, which may be the same for you.
    • KB2618444
    • KB2876217
    • KB2876315
    • KB2864063
    • KB2870699

You can go to Microsoft Download Center and use the Search box
    to find the update downloads.

I tried using System Restore points, downloaded and installed the Update Manager, tried numerous Microsoft Fix It
    gems, etc.

At the end, everything is up to date and Microsoft Update is working again. :clap
Lost the update History in the process, but it's all there. :tired

    Good Luck.

Thanks mjnc. I am printing your post for keeping and possible use in the future. My previous post describes how my issue was somewhat 'resolved' by Microsoft Update itself.

Whoa I just looked up KB2618444 because I wasn't offered this and it is from December 2011. (3 XP computers and 3 Win 7 computers). My IE update on all 6 is KB 2870699, which is also in your list.
