how to restrict both upload and download speeds for the purposes of reducing lag compansation during online multiplayer matches

    Side note:
Online games, for many years now even out the pings in game so everyone plays fairly. You can optimize your internet settings, although again, modern Windows is already good to go: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/speedguide_net_tcp_optimizer.html

Finally you can tweak your router if you have one. If you are gaming and using a wireless connection then you want to plug in instead. Direct cable has less lag.

Now, what I think you are asking:
If you have other people on your network you want to limit, then you will need your router (again, assuming you have one) manual so you can log into the router and limit bandwidth during certain hours.

Restricting upload and download won't change lag compensation in the least, in fact it an make it may make worse.

EDIT sorry MA got there before me.

I think the issue here is an overburdened network during certain hours when people are hogging it. I agree with you, as explained, that most games today compensate as much as possible for this however it is possible that his network has nothing to give with a basic broadband connection and 5 people on it, for example. I think he could limit some people on the network and it might help a tad if it's extreme only. So, you might be right after all :)

Thanks Rikky, were typing at the same time, obviously :)

I agree limiting the network speed of other users could improve gaming performance of a saturated network if that's what the poster is asking. I assumed the question was limiting upload and download locally on the gaming computer to try and improve gaming latency which again having little to go on assumed was misunderstanding the differences between download speed and latency in a none saturated network.

There was a very similar thread recently-
