This begs the question: How much is it really worth to stand outside overnight waiting to be the first on your block to have the latest iPhone?

Yes, AT&T did give the victims the newest iPhone for free. A nice gesture, but not worth being robbed at gunpoint for.

There seems to be a culture out there to have the latest and greatest and to have it NOW!!! Could that be an addiction?

In my opinion pointless and a waste of time.People that buy these i phones and smart phones with contracts are the dumb one's who i would not waste my time to even thing about getting a contracted phone it just puts you in debt more then what it should be.And the cancellation fees are outrages.

Kudos to the robbers, for figuring out where and when to find easy victims... rolleyes

The latest iPhone isn't even that cool. As far as I can tell from all the TV ads I've seen and from what the owners of them have been telling me, it has nothing ground-breaking that hasn't already been done. What it does have it still has on a smaller screen than any Android phone out there (the iPhone itself is smaller than my hand!!), and they still refuse to let you add additional storage in the form of a microSDHC card. And most of them cost more than my Samsung phone did. What is the major selling point of these things again?

That is an honest question, by the way. I read specs. I understand user preferences. I use a smartphone multiple times a day. I honestly, genuinely, have no idea what makes an iPhone so special that someone would be waiting line for it in the middle of the night in an unsafe neighborhood, just to get the latest model as soon as possible.

And if it's not an unsafe neighborhood, even more kudos to the robbers. ;)

Yes, a line of people standing around, probably half of them with several hundred dollars, probably an older iPhone... At night.. I hate a thief, but you should have some awareness about your situation.

Was nice of the company to give them a free phone.

Surprisingly, the Westheimer/Chimney Rock area of Houston is an upper-income neighborhood. I guess the thieves thought they'd find nicer phones to steal there.

That's not surprising. Most people who can afford to upgrade on release day can also afford to live in an upper-income neighborhood. In fact aren't they the only ones.

Yeah you only get held at gunpoint and robbed after you've signed Apples EULA.
