I use an USB external mouse and have no need for the synaptics touchpad. I go to Control Panel and disable the pad but before long it becomes enabled. Any ideas about what I can do to disable it permanently? I have a Toshiba Satellite using Win 7 64 bit

    Thanks

    Greetings, GrreatRon.

My first thought is to make sure that your touchpad drivers are up to date in case this issue has been addressed. Plug in your make and model number at Toshiba support to see if anything's available.

OK, thanks. I have downloaded the latest driver - we'll see if that clears up the problem. If not, I'll be back to demand that you beg my forgiveness and find the real answer. ;-))

Your an utter JOKE and should give yourself 578 uppercuts until you pass out!!!!

You have completely misread the OP and provided utter garbage as a response!!!!

What is the PC Make and Model?

Touchpad can most likely be turned off at BIOS!

Thanks for your assistance - nothing like helpful suggestions rather than castigations!

The driver update suggestion was just that - a suggestion. Human interface device driver software is often not as well written and updated as much as the more exotic hardware cousins, so it makes sense that a touchpad driver update might contain fixes for problems/symptoms such as yours. If it were my machine that would have been my first step.

Sure, if the touchpad can be disabled via the BIOS setup then go for it. Be advised that if your mouse stops functioning you'll have to restart your machine to re-enable the touchpad.

@ Bold Eagle: The next time you insult me you should use proper grammar.

Bold Eagle, Major Attitude you ain't.

You may be able to disable the Synaptic service in Startup options, so every time you boot the laptop won't try looking for it. That's under System and Security>Administrative Tools>Services.

However, my basic strategy would be just as yours, to disable the touchpad in Device Manager. Most likely there will be separate listings for the touchpad, and your USB mouse. Right click on the touchpad, and select "Disable".

Bold Eagle....I have no idea where that vitriol came from, but do not do it again...to any member. That was completely unwarranted and unacceptable.
