About 2 weeks ago, I put new memory in my pc, at the suggestion in the Malware forum. The pc is older and was running very slow, plenty of non responsive script errors, etc.
I added the new memory and the pc was like new and had no issues with it. I'm not sure if this new issue is related to this change or a whole new set of problems.

Yesterday the computer was running fine in the morning then after a few hours, it started freezing or the hourglass would appear and it would just sit there thinking...but never go anywhere. I shut it down a few times, a few times it froze and I had to hard shut it down. It would go online but after a few minutes the problem would occur again. Finally I did connected everything, unplugged from the electrical source and let it sit for while. Reconnected everything and the problem continued. I finally decided to do a system restore and for about a hour all was well, then it froze and sat thinking again.

AVG had run the night before and found nothing, a quick scan with SuperAntispyware came up clean and I had ran CCCleaner (but not registry) the night before.

Hope I explained this without being too confusing. I am not on the pc at this time.

    Any suggestions would be super.
    It's a Dell Dimension (I think a 4550)
    Windows XP

    Thanks in advance.

I do not see any threads you started in the malware fourms.

First lets start off by defragging your hard drive to see if that helps improvement.Do this option in safe mode F8.This way very few things are loaded and should not cause much of an issue.

Then after that is done i would recommend on doing a full system scan.

Thanks so much for replying and so quickly.
I'll do as you suggested and then post back here.

Here's the thread...it was back about 5 pages. I was going to post this issue in that forum but didn't feel it was a malware issue as two logs came up clean.

With it freezing I'm not sure it will run all the program that they use. I did run those in that thread. Yesterday AVG was updating and it froze. I was able to run the program I stated. Hopefully it will run those in the thread.

Sorry I forgot to attach the link to the thread.
Trying to go back and forth between two computers.

I did run the defrag and it found nothing that needed to be defragmented.

Also not sure if this is of any help. This morning I ran Hard Disk Sentinel and it passed with a perfect and the temp was 39.

And not sure what is up with MalwareBytes it keeps stating that it's corrupted. I unstalled and reinstalled it and still getting the same error message. Never had a issue with that program as I've been running it for years.

Just wanted to post a update.
chasling replied and I ran the results to the required programs.
As he stated my pc was clean up till the installation of the memory.

And all my results from AVG, MalwareBytes and SAS have been clean even up till the point of this issue.

I ran the programs and all seemed to be running fine. Was online for about 2 hours, no freezing or sitting in think mode. Went to be and in the middle of the night their was another automatic update and now the pc is back to freezing/thinking. I have not been able to access anything with this happening.

Now this is the second update in three days and followed by the same issue. Could this possibly be causing the problem. I've always had it set to auto update and never had a problem like this before.

Waiting for the logs to be read to get a clean bill of health but from what I was able to see they are clean.

There are a lot of updates this month. If your computer is auto updating, that could be the cause of the problem. Lots to download, in the background, while you are trying to work.

I do all my updates manually. On Tuesday and Wednesday, I could not even get one of the XP computers to show me what updates were needed. I suspect MS servers were really busy. The green line kept moving back and forth.

Thanks for replying. As I posted that was my original thought the first day it happened and again this morning. As of 10 minutes ago I can't access anything on the pc without it freezing/thinking mode. It has frozen my antivirus update at least a dozen times, even right clicking on a desktop icon is enough to cause the same issue. Also a few times over the hours a small screen appears stating the server is busy and has two options to pick from. It doesn't matter what option I chose it doesn't help.

Is it possible that something is running nostop in the background that I'm unware of? Could this cause the issue.

Open to any suggestions of course and thankfully for all the help provided here, as always.

chasling has stated that there is no malware in my computer. I was positive it was clean, as my scans have been.

I did do a system restore and took it back to when I installed new memory as I was positive that was a error/issue free time. It seems to have fixed the issue as I've been online off and on all day and have not had the freezing/thinking mode issue.

I just posted a update in the malware thread if you want to read my thoughts on the issue.

    And help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
