Adware Infection

    Hello everyone,

I've been having a couple of problems with my internet explorer (FireFox) which I suspect is a simple adware infection, though I must admit to having a fairly limit span of knowledge of the inner workings of computers.

I've run through the whole of the 'Read and run me first' following the instructions for Windows 7 64bit and have attached the relevant logs to this message (Please note: Prior to running this entire process I used MalwareBytes on its own so that is why the MB Log from when I followed the instructions is so small. I still have the log from its initial run, please let me know if you want that attached as well).

Just to give you a brief description of my problem: Upon loading a webpage, three additional 'adverts' load into my browser, hovering over the webpage. One is a box running the left-hand side of my browser pretending to be a search engine's 'related searches' suggestions. Another two boxes cling to the bottom of my browser, pretending to be adverts for various things.

Along with this, when I load a new webpage it occasionally loads an additional page pretending to offer me some kind of reward, or claim that I need to update my browser as my version is obsolete.

Thank you for taking the time to look at this problem, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    James.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!
First I just want to correct some terminology. Internet Explorer is a browser created by Microsoft. Firefox is a browser created by Mozilla. So for future reference you would say "problems with my browser which is Firefox". If you had problem with Internet Explorer too or some other browser like Google Chrome ( which you also have installed ), you would indicate that they also have problems. Sometimes problems are in all browsers and sometimes only in one browser and it is important for us to know this and for you to test them so you can tell us. ;)

Uninstall the below programs. If you do not find them or they will not uninstall, just keep going.
    BitTorrentBar Toolbar

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Run OTM.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of
      the code box
    Code:
    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Files
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Conduit
    C:\Users\James\AppData\LocalLow\Conduit
    C:\Program Files (x86)\BitTorrentBar
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Whilokii
    C:\Windows\TEMP\*.*
    C:\Users\James\AppData\Local\Temp\*.*
    :Reg
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\S-1-5-21-3583214401-3411179987-2742201503-1000\Software\AppDataLow\Software\Smartbar]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\S-1-5-21-3583214401-3411179987-2742201503-1000\Software\Softonic]
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "SpybotSD TeaTimer"=-
    [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3583214401-3411179987-2742201503-1000\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\run]
    "SpybotSD TeaTimer"=-
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MoveIt!.png button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.
Shutdown all other programs including your browser when you run the below GetLogs.bat scan so that you will see the popup window from TrendMicro HijackThis. You need to click the Accept button twice to allow it to run a scan.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • the JRT.TXTlog
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Hi chaslang, thanks so much for the speedy response.

I have run through the things you gave me to do but the problem still persists, I've attached the relevant logs to this message. Apologies for the doublepost of OTM but I forgot to run as admin the first time so went back and did that step again.

And sorry for my faulty terminology, I'll work on that. :)

Thanks again for all your help,
    James.

You're welcome. Please run the procedure in the below:

    Reset Firefox to Defaults

Did that fix your problems with Firefox?

    Hi chaslang,

Thanks so much for all your help, resetting Firefox seems to have sorted the issue. I did check the other browsers (see? I'm learning!) but they didn't seem to have the same problem and I didn't want to bump myself down the list with a post.

You've been a fantastic help and I would highly recommend this site to anyone that needed assistance, can't rate you highly enough.

    Thanks again.

    All the best,
    James.

You're welcome. Glad we could help.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    7. If you are running Win 8, Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below to flush restore points:
      • Refer to the instructions for your WIndows version in this link: Disable And Enable System Restore
      • What we want you to do is to first disable System Restore to flush restore points some of which could be infected.
      • Then we want you to Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
