A few years ago, my daughter created a movie for a birthday celebration. I need to make duplicates now, and quickly, so I am trying to import it into Movie Maker to re-create it. I have a dvd that I tried to burn from the original, and it split the project into separate files: The 30-second intro page, and the 16-minute full video. There are some other files, too, such as .bup files, but I don't know what they are for. When I moved copies of the video files to my desktop, they played fine -- music and images perfectly synced.

However, when I import the files into Movie Maker from either the dvd or desktop, only the audio imports -- no video. What can I do?

These are the names of the files on the dvd:

    Folder: VIDEO_TS

    Inside this folder:

Thumbs [date] Data Base File 23 KB
VIDEO_TS.BUP [date] BUP File 12 KB
VIDEO_TS [date] IFO File 12 KB
VIDEO_TS [date] VOB File 20,796 KB
VTS_01_0. BUP [date] BUP File 22 KB
VTS_01_0 [date] IFO File 22 KB
VTS_01_1 [date] VOB File 920,502 KB

All except the .bup and Thumbs files now have the eye icon from having played them in Cyberlink PowerDVD.

I have never used WMM before. I searched for similar threads, and I saw someone else had the same problem, but it was 5 years ago on a different system. There was also talk of codecs and file types, and I didn't understand any of that. :p

I am running Windows 8 and WMM Live.

    Thanks for any help.

Ok, I downloaded Total Converter to convert the files to .avi, and that seems to have fixed the problem. Unfortunately, the free trial software watermarked the video with its name.

Can anyone recommend a safe, free, video converter?

I have been trying out different programs that I have seen mentioned on-site, but I really would like to get input/recommendations. One that I tried was AVS, which also caused the same problem as Total Converter; and I was downloading Ace until I noticed it would have installed Sweetpacks and Conduit toolbar. Another one I tried turned out to be for converting for Iphone use, not .avi for my purposes. Anyone?

When you get to that page, just click "decline" and the download will continue.

I just tried that and the download worked perfectly.

    Thank you so much!

I will consider the thread closed, but just before I do, can you recommend a freeware dvd maker? When I burn the movie project onto dvd, I want to create a menu page. My Windows 8 laptop did not come with Windows DVD Maker.

Thank you again for your advice with the converter.

I just found out that Windows 8 did away with DVD Maker. I just found a YouTube tutorial on how to burn Movie Maker video onto DVDs using Free Studio 2013. I hope that is a viable source. I'm crossing my fingers.

    Glad it worked for you.;)

    Here are other DVD makers,converters.

One of my favorites is DVDFlick, although it hasn't been updated in quite a while.

As far as making a Menu page, I have never tried that.

What I do is to make a menu and take a snap of that, print it and include it in the DVD case.

This is what I use - you import it to the DVD template and it fits perfectly in the DVD case.

They also have a free version, but this has more options.

    Sorry, that's the best I can do.:wave

Couldn't edit above, but with Meritline, you import the menu to the DVD case template, print it and trim it - it is an exact fit for the DVD case.

    Here's the Meritline free version:
