Lately some of the downloads i have been downloading off the site some are coming out with small bits of malware or viruses.

Yesterday i downloaded CDBurnerXP the newest version and it brought PuP.Optional.OpenCandy this little bugger is no real worry did not really effect any thing on system that i could see.

But if some of the files are affected then who ever is running the scans for the site is being lazy.

I thank you for your concern.

    What program is detecting this?

Also, please refrain from calling people who run this site lazy. Not only is it offensive, it is an utter falsehood.

You do know that adware is not the same thing as malware, or viruses, right?

You can opt out of it. I recommend you read the installation next time instead of being a mad clicker.

Or, you could read the page that we offer for it:

    Limitations:
This program is advertising supported and may offer to install third party programs that are not required for the program to run. These may include a toolbar, changing your homepage, default search engine or other third party programs. Please watch the installation carefully to opt out.

Now, who is the lazy one?

Do you have any examples where a warning is not added, or you cannot opt out?

Not trying to call any body lazy but it seems that some of the programs i have downloaded did come with some thing.

Malwarebytes is detecting CDBurnerXP with PuP.Optional.OpenCandy.Never had a virus or malware attached to it be for.

Well, see my above edited post.

I can't bring your complaint to the site admins when the warnings were already there.

Please let me know of any instances where you cannot opt out and/or no warning is given.

    Thanks!

And i make sure that any third party program i use or install does not add any extras to system i learned that a long time ago.

You apparently missed this one and blasted through the install.

I just installed it, opted out, and then installed MBAM.

Look carefully at what it found. The three dlls it detects in a temp directory used by applications to extract their contents and install. It only makes sense that this also includes opt-out software.

So CDBurnerXP didn't install it. It merely had the components in temp, because they had to be extracted. As techs, we really need to analyze these things before pulling the fire alarm and running out the front door.

    1. Always read the download page.
    2. Always read the license agreement and steps in installing.
    3. Clear your temp files before running MBAM!

    Hi Goldenskull,

PUP.Optional.OpenCandy is actually associated with ADWARE and not malware. As Adrynalyne pointed out, MajorGeeks listing clearly states that This program is advertising supported and may offer to install third party programs that are not required for the program to run. You can read a brief description of this 'potential adware' related program here at this link. Additionally, you can use the PUP.Optional.OpenCandy removal guide at that site in order to remove this program completely from your computer in a few steps.

"When Malwarebytes Anti-Malware detects PUP.Optional.OpenCandy you do not immediately have to worry, because it is not a virus or other malware. But only a adware related program classified as PUP because it has a bad reputation or behavior."

Yes but ad ware can all so be come a virus or malware it has been proven in the past.

I am not really in a panic but when it says on site that all items are scanned this was obviously missed as a few others.

Hi Goldenskull... This is VERY good, not to panic I mean there is no need to in this instance...

Because as I mentioned on the that website link which I had provided above earlier, the PUP.Optional.OpenCandy is actually a somewhat harmless adware and NOT malware (or a virus, either) and the matter is fairly easily resolved by following the listed removal step-by-steps on the aforementioned site.

Additionally I guess that I can understand, since you had never seen a warning like that from a pop-up via the Malwarebytes program, you might be a bit upset by that. However I also agree with Adrynalyne, in that there is no need to post in there something like "The scans are being overlooked!" or accusing the volunteers who help out in here of being too "lazy" to catch a problem which you very well may have unintentionally caused by yourself in the first place by not reading the "limitations" before downloading programs.

Just so you know, for future reference: Starting posts in here by inferring: "I have a problem and it's all somebody else in heres fault!" can be somewhat counter-productive. ;)

Reading the available support documentation is always a good practice. My thanks to the admin team that runs this website. First rate. :)

Just recently I downloaded and installed CDBurnerXP and no problems. As a matter of fact I've never encountered any problems downloading anything from MG. That's why I always download everything from MG because I consider it the safest one around.

As already said: read the damn pages. In addition when installing go through the installation process and untick anything you don't want.

I'm going to quote that and then close this thread as this download was tested in response to this thread by Adrynalyne, Oma and Kestrel. The files were found in the temp files and if those are deleted before scanning nothing is found. They are also adware as apposed to viruses.

The simple fact, as I have stated before, is that FREE software needs to make money somehow. They ask you to install adware/toolbars to do that. Its not going away and has nothing to do with Major Geeks or the testing that is done. The owners here know the software companies put it in. If we discounted every software company who did, we'd have no downloads.
