Game console
Im looking to buy a gaming system
do I get a Xbox. play station(ps3 or ps4?) or wii?
I have a big tv and I'd like to play games with people who live not with me

Xbox 1 probably, the big old heavy lump would make lots of black acrid smoke when burned and I'd get rescued:cool

PS3 just for the controller, not enough games for the ps4 yet for a desert island and they're £460 in the uk with one game so that money could be better spent on a more safety concious travel company.

Depends on the games you wish to play, i wanted to play halo so i ended up with a 360. I probably wont be buying a xbox one unless something new comes out that i want.

As of today I've played 19,723 games of chess at Chess.com and I've never been bored with any of them.

Other - Solar powered laptop with satellite modem. So I can call for help and won't be bored while I wait to be rescued.

I have been told that back in the dark ages, they used an actual "board" with grids, and small plastic, wood, or even rock icons similar to the ones we see on the computer today. They would then manually set up the board, and sit across from each other, and actually move the little chess pieces around with their hands. How... barbaric? :-D

Ha!

I love playing in the "barbaric" fashion - it's just so rare to find friendly human competition around these parts. I played tournament chess for several years, but that is so grueling (physically, mentally and monetarily). Online chess does provide a free outlet, and if blitz or bullet is played you can cram a lot of games into a short session.

Which is a shame: I suck at speed chess - gettin' too old, I reckon.

I have heard rumors some of you old folks actually played Solitaire with cellulose coated paper, dealt by hand. I just can't believe it. :-D

I really like things that make me think. Sudoku, Free Cell, etc.

My sister taught me to play chess but none of my friends really play so I don't get to play that. I refuse to play with the computer because it always cheats :-D

Hence why my laptop is solar powered. Another advantage is the laptop comes with a screen, while the poll says nothing about a TV being there on the island and waiting to be connected to a gaming console...

I'm not sure what I want to play. I've heard good things about Halo. I have read an issue of NINTENDO POWER in 25 years, so I just don't know.
That's a good reason why I made this poll.

My Brother wants me to join WoW and I just got the X-wing series for my computer, so I'll just leave it up to the girl who hangs out with me.

I agree with that, I like the board better.
I always have a few games going online with my dad and he likes to say he gets confused by the flat board.
but it comes to the point where you've played enough games and you know what you are doing. my favorite is when a player has just cleared the king side and is about the castle and I have set up my queen to go from D3 to H7

I play a lot of poker online and when I first started to play in tourneys at an actual casino, I was making mistakes all the time. I was told I greatly confused the other players cause I have dystarthria and I seem like I don't know what I'm doing, yet I made it to the final table in my first tournament. Which is a lot of luck and some knowledge of knowing what to do.

Why did I ask you to make sense out of your post?
Because I didn't understand it, and although you seem to have some issue with me, as you to snipe at me constantly. I ignore your negative issues and remain upbeat about life which means I always try to absorb what's useful.
So I need to understand your post to see what, if anything, you offered that was useful.
Yet all your post was about was trying to snipe at me.

Not that I'm aware of.

I play chess via facebook with a few people, otherwise, I play on the chess.com/pogo.com sites or a real board.
I don't own a timer, so a real board can take forever.

 

Well there you have it. The only game you care to mention that you like to play is chess and you already have plenty of ways to do that and the other platforms you've created a poll for don't offer you anything better than you already have. So stick with your PC and your real life board and be happy. I personally like chess as a drinking game, console, board or otherwise.

which is why Im looking for a game console to play other games. I just don't keep track of what game console is best, so I made a poll.

catch-22 indeed. But you're not getting anywhere because you still haven't stated what games you want to play, or the type or genre of games you'd like to play. So either state something meaningful or continue to gripe that no one is giving you any feedback. Either way the ball is entirely in your court.

If you like chess you will probably like turn-based strategy games. They're like large-scale chess on steroids. They are also primarily on the PC.

What kinds of board games and social activities do you like? Football fans usually like Madden, for example.

ON the nintendo I used to play Tetris2(against a person) RPGs(final fantasy, dragon warrior, SimCity.) and sports games, bowling, wii sports,
NFL BLITZ and some baseball game I can't think of the name.

 

The Wii U is clearly the only choice for a new game console.

I play a game at chess.com
and it comes down to a few pieces left on both sides
I think I had a game were it was a rook and a king vs a king

so we play till time runs out for one of the players

when time runs out, we get told "0.5 INSUFFICIENT MATERIAL"

which makes sense, you cant win with a rook and a king vs a king( or whatever the pieces were)

so why does the game wait till the end(which can be a while of futile moves) to say "INSUFFICIENT MATERIAL"
why doesnt it say that as soon as the game boils down to the R+K Vs K?

As far as the time control / insufficient material: no way both players ran out of time simultaneously. Most likely the side with only the King ran out of time first - hence the insufficient material message.

Of course you can. You can't win with King + Knight vs. King or with King + Bishop vs. King, but King + Rook vs. King is actually a pretty easy win. In the attached graphic: White to move, Rook to N8 mate.

One thing to think about is backward compatibility with games for earlier consoles. It doesn't look good for any of them but at least Sony is trying:

"Sony's cloud gaming service Gaikai will allow gamers to stream PS3 titles from the cloud next year, but there's no word yet on how many games will be available or if users will get automatic or discounted access to games they've already purchased."

ok A GAME JUST HAPPENED

where it ended up being a queen+king Vs a king
the king had 17 secs left on his clock
K+Q had 0, ran out of time
instead of the lone king winning, the game said:

Game drawn - insufficient material

why is this?
The king won, the K+Q ran out of time.
So why didnt the king win and the K+Q lose?

 

A King cannot win a game by himself - there must be sufficient supporting material.

1. K = insufficient material

2. K + N = insufficient material

3. K + B = insufficient material

Any other combination is sufficient material to win a game of chess - K + Rook or Queen, K + 2 Bishops, K + 2 Knights, K + Bishop and Knight (although that is extremely difficult), even K + Pawn because the pawn has the capability of promotion.

Doesn't matter if you have an hour left on your clock: if all you have on the board is a King or a King with insufficient supporting material, then the best result you can achieve is a draw.
