you are a cashier at a store that sells lots of stuff, including T-shirts.

A sharply dressed man comes up to your register and has one(1) $26.37 (with tax) T-shirt.
    He hands you $50

he says hang on, I want another
he grabs an identical T-shirt and pays you another $50
he says, I gotta go and runs out the store
<conveniently left out>the customer is gone, no way to get him back, he said, "keep the change"</conveniently left out>

so you have sold 2 T-shirts(total price $26.37x2=$52.74)
he's paid you $100 and left

so do you put the 2 $50s into the cash register
    OR
do you put in the 2 $50s and take out $100-52.74=$47.26 and put that on the counter

    FOUND MONEY

Then put the $47.26 into your pocket

This isn't an ethical question, it is a question about whether you steal from the customer, or the company steals from the customer.

The correct answer is to put the change in an envelope and explain to the employees that it is the customer's change.

Under no circumstance is it the employee's right to pocket the change.

If the customer never comes back, then the company keeps it. If you pocket it, you have stolen, either from the company or the customer.

No longer relevant to the discussion.

that's the part we are having a debate about:

the company is owed money for the T-shirts, $52.74
once they are paid for the T-shirts, why do they get the money?
the customer is gone, no way to get him back, he said, "keep the change"

    so the debate is
does the extra money go to the store(which was paid for what it sold)
    or to the clerk

I fail to see how you can arrest the clerk for stealing from the company.

You neglected to say "Keep the change" on your original post, which changes everything, ya twit.

    yeah, it was a blunder
I re-watched the show and saw that part..................
I swear this show, "caught red-handed" is 99% scripted.
but those loss-prevention guys do some dumb stuff

    Not at all
because it was all in the show, the man said it as he was running out, but they still arrested the cashier for stealing from the store.
That's what didnt make sense to me

Cause the show knows he said "Keep the change"...

Yeah and you knew it all along.

You didn't come back and say, oh I forgot this little detail. You acted like it was there from the start and conveniently added it to your reply. You would have added it to the original post and not said anything too, if the edit timer hadn't run out.

Anyone with 5th grade math would know that if he already handed you $50 and bought 2 tee shirts for $54, he wouldn't give you another $50 to cover the difference.

And don't say he only had $50's, because in reality nobody walks around with just $50's in their pocket because a lot of stores (unless it's a really large store) don't take bills higher than $20.

All modern retail stores have cameras covering the checkout area. So this is not a question of ethics. It's a question of whether the employee in question is dumb enough to pocket cash where that camera can capture it.
