My mom's computer is having trouble starting Avast Anti-virus. When she clicks the icon, she gets the message "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail." I tried searching for the log in "C:\program files\AVAST Software" but was unable to find one. She's also unable to uninstall it, as the Windows Uninstall redirects to Avast's uninstall, which gives the same message. The computer is a Compaq Notebook PC running Windows Vista Home Basic SP2 with a 32-bit Operating System.
I looked online and one person suggested this:
I ran the scan and Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. The log is attached below.

Before this, my dad had recently uninstalled McAfee Total Protection as the license was almost up. Afterwards, he tried installing Norton but was unable to until Avast was uninstalled. I've also uninstalled all five C++ 2008 Redistribute and one 2005, and some C++ .NET Frameworks (which I probably shouldn't have). How should I proceed from here?

    Hello,

let's try to fix the problem without removing avast.

    Uninstall all Visual C++ Redistributions.
Uninstall all .NET Frameworks that appear in your add/remove programs list.
Reboot your pc (to be safe).

Download and Install Visual C++ 2005,2008,2010 (All 3) Direct Links to 32bit versions:

    2005: http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=14431

    2008: http://download.microsoft.com/download/d/d/9/dd9a82d0-52ef-40db-8dab-795376989c03/vcredist_x86.exe

    2010: http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/B/C/5BC5DBB3-652D-4DCE-B14A-475AB85EEF6E/vcredist_x86.exe

When done reboot your pc and see if this fixes avast, if not download and install the latest .NET Framework:

    .NET 4.5.1: http://download.microsoft.com/downl...79F8E2/NDP451-KB2858728-x86-x64-AllOS-ENU.exe

Start by installing these 4 in this order and see what happens. :)

I've done all of the above, but I'm still having the same problems.
I actually did find the log when trying to uninstall though.

    Hi

I would also run the uninstaller tools for McAfee and Norton again even if you have run them before as left over parts from previous installed anti-virus software can cause issues with other anti-virus software you are installing

    McAfee Uninstaller Tool
    Norton Uninstaller Tool

*do you have Spybot S&D installed if so uninstall as it can in some instances block installs, its part of the protection it offers, but can be a hindrance*

and also run the Avast Uninstaller tool, then reboot and with the .Net and Visual C files you have from the earlier post installed and updated (do check Windows update, just in case) try Avast again

I ran the tools and re-installed Avast, and it loads up normally :)
Windows Resource Protection reports some files are still corrupted though. Is this a serious issue?

Do another check for corrupt system files and try to repair them by following these steps:

    1. Click on the Start Button
    2. Chose "Run"
    3. Type into the box: sfc /scannow
    4. Click "OK"
See if Windows Resource Protection still reports corrupt files.
