Interesting concept and I agreed with one comment in that article in that press does criticise thin models and dolls for promoting unhealthy dieting.

That Barbie pic should be taken at the doctors where the doctor is explaining childhood obesity and bad parenting.

I can see the need for a Barbie that is of a shape and/or size that could actually happen in nature as opposed to the freak she is now, but I fail to see the point of this.

No doubt Tibbs. The triple chin is, at least to me, a sign of laziness = ugly.

Don't think Mattel are going to make this doll as they didn't release the pic it came off Worth1000 *that well known photochopping site* and think the point was the facebook group for larger models, wanted to guage comments from its users on the thought of a popular toy and should it reflect the larger lady, low and behold the press on a slack day latched onto it and posted it as a news story.

A size 12 (which I believe is average for women) is now considered "plus size" where up to a size 26-28 would fall in the obese category. However, they are sold in the same stores so people tend to lump plus size with unhealthy obesity.

It's a little tiring to keep hearing that if you're over a size 6 (or 8 in some cases) that you're a fat slob that needs to go on a diet but if your morbidly obese, you're praised for being yourself and not conforming to the ideals of the world. WHAT?

Why can't we just promote healthy looking women? Although I know they won't do it but I think it would be nice to have a more realistic looking barbie, but that one is terribly obese and would not be sending a good message.

If the doll was put on the market, it would sell better as "Honey Boo Boo's Mom." :-D

Fluff is tough, but fat is where it's at. What next, Barbie is really a Billy? To each his own I guess, but as for me and my house...

I'm really just quoting this to get an excuse to say I agree with it. Well said! :strong

Marilyn Monroe was a size 16. In today's society, she never have gotten as much as single audition.

Based on my own experiences and observations of the culture I live in, I have come to the conclusion that for any and all clothing designers out there, the average adult woman is built like a cross between Kate Moss at age 16, and a prepubescent boy. So since I have curves and muscles, I find myself shopping in the plus-size section of every clothing store I walk into, which is fine with me. At least those designers make pants that don't require a belt to stay up despite the fact they actually fit over my hips.

**** the world and its shortsighted shallowness. People come in different sizes and shapes. That's how it's supposed to be. To glorify one extreme and vilify the other, or vice versa, is to ignore and insult the vast majority of people who exist somewhere in between the two polar opposites. And who, despite what the mass media would have us believe, are more beautiful than either of the other two. ;)

Maybe you ladies can help me out. I see women have sizes in numbers from say 6 to 18. What does that mean? I know the larger the number, the larger the size. As a man, I have Small, Medium, Large, XLarge, and the additional XXX's for shirts, pants come in a waist and inseem length. In other words, does a size say 10, mean you have a waist of a certain size and a height of a certain size?

And why are the shoes sized different between men and women?

I don't have a clue on shoe sizes...that doesn't make any sense to me, either. In women's shoes I wear a 9AA, sometimes an 8 1/2, but in men's (work boots, mostly) I wear an 8D.

Women's clothes used to be based on measurements, but women are sensitive to that. And the more you pay, the larger a smaller size is (for instance, a $20 dress will fit a size 14 woman, but if she pays $100 for the same dress from a different store, it'll magically be a size 8).

Basically, a size 8 (which is about the biggest size a woman can be without society thinking she is hugely fat) is a 34-24-36 (bust, waist, hip). That would be considered a medium.

I think what confuses you is that you're assuming there is a uniform standard for women's sizes. That is not the case. A size 10 shirt is not for the smae body type as a pair of size 10 jeans. Size 10 jeans of one brand are the size of size 2 or size 16 of other brands.

There is a reason it takes forever for us to shop for clothes. :puke

Ahh, I get it now. Size 14 is better than XXXL. Off hiding now.

Honestly, thanks for the info. So there is a size X top, size X bottom. Makes some sense.

Ah, but you've only grazed the surface here...

Size X for tops is split in subcategories: t-shirt, blouse, shirt, sweater, tank top, workout top, and so on. Similarly with bottoms: Size X for jeans, pants, sweat pants, capris, shorts, skirts, long skirts, mini skirts, and so on.

Basically, when I go clothes shopping I walk into a clothing store, grab a pair of pants that have the same width as my hips as I hold them against my body, regardless of what size is printed on the label. I then grab a pair of the size immediately above and immediately below the first one I grabbed, and go try all three of them on. That is the only way I know of to find a pair of pants that fit me. This method applies to every single item of female clothing that I may need. Every. Single. One.

Yes, I hate shopping for clothes. Deeply and passionately. Do these companies not realize that we have full-time jobs and better things to do than trying on clothes?

Wait, no. They don't. They're kind of moronic that way.

I just go to the rack and get the Levis 32x32. I don't even always try the on. Trying to buy more American, so a bit confused on their fit vs Levis. But no problems yet.

I think if they had the same fitting system for men, we would just run around naked. :-D

I now feel like I should amend my previous post:

When it comes to jeans, I hunt down the Levi's rack. I find the 515 model, grab size 6 Long, and hightail it for the checkout. :p

I just get the 550 32"x32" jeans. 32" waist, 32" inseam. Even says it on the back of the pants. :-D
