    Hi

You know XP end of life is coming.
MS sez I wont be able to get MS Update.
MS sez I wont be able to get MSE security updates.
BUT does that mean I cant get MSE security updates from MS Update but I will still be able to get MSE security updates when I click on "update" in MSE, or no??

    thanks

Not sure, but I suspect you will still be able to get updates from avast or avg or any of the others if you have to switch...:-o

Microsoft said it won't be providing updates for MSE under XP after the EOL for XP. So, if you try to do the update from within MSE, it won't work. Updates for MSE will still be available under Vista and later though.

Well I dont like AVG I will probably use avast.

My company is moving to Linux after testing 8 and 8.1. They temd to stay one OS behind and don't see a path around 8 so we will get Linux instead of 7. They are having trouble moving legacy apps to 7 and no hope running them under 8. Most of the apps have a Linux counterpart. If you are worried about viruses, you may want to consider Linux.

So the apps they use have counterparts in GNU/Linux, but not Windows 7?

If you are going to switch apps, there is no real advantage to switching to to GNU/Linux vs. 7, other than less compatibility. Find counterparts for 7 ;)

I did try win7 it was good BUT some of my vital legacy apps wouldnt work no matter what, and "Movie Maker" was butchered so that was the end of that.

As for win8 they made that for touch screen so stuff it.

    win7 SP1 that is.........

Choose 7 Pro and use XP Mode.

His 32-bit machine won't support virtualization so, he won't be able to use XP Mode. I can't on mine either.

THIS is the advice I was thinking of while scrolling through this thread. Admittedly, this advice won't work for everyone, but the OP sounds like a savvy person who knows how to troubleshoot (or at least come to MG for assistance?!). :-D

If the OP thinks this is worthy of consideration, I would STRONGLY recommend Zorin or perhaps Zorin Lite (depending on computer specs) as the perfect entry point to Linux for a Windows XP migrator.

You can check it out here: http://www.zorin-os.com/

As a matter of practicality, the download will be an issue due to the 28.8 speed, so perhaps a trip to the local library is in order? Or a cellphone download, transferred to the WinXP box, to be burned as an ISO image to CD or a bootable usb stick? Or a friend's computer?

Once that problem is solved, your future internet access (or lack thereof!) will become less of an issue as Linux is pretty immune to viruses/malware and will not require that type of software, chewing up additional valuable CPU cycles. And while updating should be done, it's of much less importance than Windows, as the patches are smaller and more frequent. Conversely, not something I'd normally recommend, but a user such as the OP could disable updates completely and remain safe from viruses/malware on a Linux system.

You may not LIKE the advice, but you're an IDEAL candidate for Linux for MANY practical reasons, if the original ISO download issue can be resolved. Worst case scenario, it could just take a very long time... In which case, I'd recommend the Zorin Lite version over the main version, as the ISO download will be smaller.

You've got important long-term decisions to make. I'm sure you'll make the correct one for you. Good luck!

I consider "free" cost a real advantage, as well as "free"dom from vendor lock-in to Microsoft. IMO, you shouldn't have to pay a second license fee for Win8 software that you already paid for in Win7. While not as big of a deal for individual users, this can get quite expensive for businesses and multi-seat user licenses.

Under that premise, if you're going to switch apps, there is no real advantage to moving towards Win8. If you're already making the switch and willing to absorb the learning curve, why not switch to a free alternative..."free" as in cost, as well as in "freedom."

    But that's just my opinion...

If one still has the Windows XP CD-Key then I see no reason why not use VMWare Player or Virtual Box over XP Mode, They offer much better compatibility. This of course applies to personal use.

In regards to MSE I'd switch to avast. Been using it for years and never had any infections, I also like avast's low resource footprint compared to my previous experiences with AVG and Avira.

I didn't mention switching to 8 though, and most things that work in 7, work in 8. GNU/Linux used in a corporate environment is typically not free, nor are manhours. You can rest pretty much assured that a business moving from Microsoft to GNU/Linux will be burning some manhours, more than moving to a newer version of win32. So freedom yes, but free? Not really. This isn't a home usage scenario.

The scenario you mentioned doesn't always work out and then it gets REALLY expensive.

    Example:
    http://linux.slashdot.org/story/11/02/22/0244242/german-foreign-office-going-back-to-windows

    Industry standard RedHat:

    https://www.redhat.com/wapps/store/catalog.html

Assuming no server costs, 179 dollars per workstation for a year of support. About what you would pay Microsoft for a license to install (maybe even more depending on agreement with MS), if a company goes with Windows, they get free support for bugs and defects for the first 5 years. Now for Windows 7, thats only a year left, but for 8...

So to each their own. All I am saying is that if you have to switch out all your apps, the advantages suddenly start to disappear. Now if they are a java shop, then it is a no brainer to switch away from MS.

I think the OP's name gives a good indication. And whether he/she uses XP Mode, VM Ware Player, Virtual Box or Microsoft's VM, he/she still wouldn't get updates for MSE in XP which was his/her original question.

I agree with you that there are costs, no matter which way you look at it. License fees vs. support...pick your poison. That's why I emphasize free as in "freedom"...not necessarily cost. For me, personally, I don't want to subscribe to vendor lock-in because of "sunk costs" previously spent; i.e. "I already paid for it, so might as well keep using it." I want the freedom of going a different direction without the consideration of sunken software costs factoring into the decisions.

With that said, I'm a proponent of "the right tool for the job" and sometimes that tool is Windows. Based on the OP dilemma, I'm not sure WinXP or any "upgrade" of Windows is the right tool for him. IMO, Linux solves most, if not all of his issues, so I wanted to put it out there for his consideration.

But only he can answer that question. If he looks at all options and decides Win7 is the way to go, then Windows is the best tool for him. But another tool does exist, and may indeed be a better tool.

Considering 64 bit hardware back then usually ran 32-bit XP, not really. If we judged by net handles and avatars, we would be very lost...for instance, it would appear I am running Linux Mint. I am not. Anyway...

Running Windows 7 takes care of all the questions, as well as keeps the poster updated against exploits, AND with XP Mode, allows for backwards compatibility. Of course, we don't have the hardware specs...

GNU/Linux also indirectly takes care of his problem. Interesting you didn't mention how that doesn't answer the original poster's question as well...do I have a target painted on my forehead? Forgive me if I didn't see a reason to continue on with the MSE answers, seeing you had already provided one...

Were they games or something that required hw acceleration?

    No.
    I didnt try any games.
I cant remember what all they were.
What POed me worst was the way they butchered Movie Maker, they ruined the "time line". I havta have Movie Maker.

I made a image of the win7 install, I mite try win7 again sometime, all I have to do is restore the image.
    It was win7 Pro 32bit SP1.

AND I keep updated image of 32bitXPSP3 so after EOL if XP goes haywire I just restore the image.
