Volume on Laptop keeps randomly muting itself

    I had this problem just start this morning and it is annoying!

    The volume on my laptop just keeps muting itself randomly. All I have to do to fix it is hit the unmute button, but it does this every minute or so.

    I have a Dell Vostro 3700 laptop that is running windows 7.

    Any suggestions on how I can get this fixed?

    Hi

    Is your Windows 7 at Service Pack 1?
    If you boot into safe mode (F8 at boot and choose safe mode with networking) is the sound ok now?
    In Device Manager do you have any devices with a yellow ! mark next to them and if so what one/s?

    Run the Audio Troubleshooter built into Win7 and info HERE and see if that helps, if not then please do answer the above and then follow the below.

    It may just be a case of re-installing your Audio driver from Dell for your model, Download the Chipset driver first HERE and install and reboot, then the Audio one from HERE and reboot and test,

    If you have some experience with computer hardware and are able to identify different components, you can open up the computer and making sure that the sound card is snugly seated in it's slot.

    I would scan for malware just to be sure. I would also reboot. You might also look at short-cut key assignments. I would unmute then sit back and don't touch a thing to see if it mutes again.

    @rusty - this is a notebook so I doubt there is a sound "card", or slot to put one in.
