MSCONFIG Problem

I royally screwed up my XP MSCONFIG by inadvertently disabling all startups. I cannot restart in any mode. When I attempt to boot off the XP CD it blue screens before I can get to the set up screen to initiate a repair. Am I doomed?

 

What does the blue screen say?

It is impossible to disable all startup modes with msconfig, so the problem likely lies elsewhere.

 

If BIOS isn't set so the CD drive is ahead of the hard drive in the boot order, more than likely it's still trying to boot from the hard drive. I don't know if Repair will fix the issue especially if after you choose the repair option, it doesn't list a Windows installation to log into.

 

It is booting off the XP CD. It goes through the windows set up process but blue screens before it get to the options window.

 

The Blue Screen is the standard "problem has been detected and windows has been shut down...." message. It concludes STOP: 0x0000007B (0xf78d2524, 0xc0000034). This problem occurred immediately after restarting once I checked the box that says "disable all" on the startup files in the MSCONFIG so I have no doubt that caused the problem.

 

Possibly...do you have any Roxio (used to be called Adaptec) software installed?

• Boot sector virus
• Device driver corruption
• Hardware incompatibilities
