    Hi,

I recently tried to upload an avatar to a website using Internet Explorer 9. The avatar would not upload, no errors, just 0% uploading.

When I used Firefox, the image uploaded without a problem.

I cannot upgrade IE9 because my OS, Vista 32 bit, does not support IE beyond 9, I believe the current version is 11 (guess).

My question is: Is it time for me consider changing browsers to a more modern version? If yes, which browser is likely to be the best for Vista 32 bit. I have read reviews, but it seems to be a case of 'take your pick'.

    Best wishes.

    A

Ps. If I could install the latest IE, I would choose this browser (due to familiarity)

It's difficult to say with any certainty what your uploading problem is due to. However, it can be said that using an outdated browser exposes you to to vulnerabilities that have been addressed and fixed in current releases of MSIE. Based on that alone I suggest you switch browsers. My personal favorite is Mozilla Firefox. In addition to being highly customizable, it is constantly being updated to address security vulnerabilities.

I leave the latest (last) version of IE installed and sometimes, I've run across banking systems that require SOME form of IE.

But I'll use Firefox or some other more modern browser for all other functions. I'm glad that these third-party vendors don't find including older OS's to be 'beneath them' like MS does. Then again, I've never understood why a Browser would be 'necessary' for an OS anyway.

As for why Microsoft does anything, I cannot say. However, in the case of IE and Windows, I think there are two reasons MS must have been looking at:

    1. Without a browser installed with the OS, there couldn't be ready and enabled browsing on an new PC
    2. Many people I think don't even realize or know that at some point along the way (I can't remember...Windows 98 SE maybe?), it used to be possible to use a folder as a browser so that you would open the folder and then select a favorite from the folder drop down and then the net page would appear in the folder window without the browser opening. This feature of course meant that Internet Explorer had to be on the PC as the engine for the feature, so maybe the tradition of having the browser installed with the OS just stuck.

I guess it was a stupid idea to give a folder browser capabilities. Actually, it may still be possible in Windows XP, although I have tried and couldn't find the settings for it. Web sites selected from the Favorites menu of a folder open in the actual default browser, even if the default is IE 8.

As for IE, I have XP, and I just use IE 8 for checking on updates when necessary. Otherwise, I use the latest Firefox or Opera (12)...

    Thanks to all for contributing.

I have downloaded the latest version of Firefox (keeping IE 9). I got the impression from some sites that IE 9 is considered old, and I cannot update beyond this version(I think that the current version is 11, and this will probably increase with time).

    To the Firefox experts:

I have downloaded Adblock Plus for FF (I assume that it is necessary for this browser), but I can't see it in 'Program and Features' (IE versions are present), the icon is at the bottom LHS of the page (FF)!

In IE I used to use a zoom of 125%. The equivalent appears to be clicking zoom in view (I can see the magnification, but not its value).

Do I need Adobe Flash with FF, I did with IE9?

    Any further tips greatly received.

    Best wishes.

    Forgot to ask regarding Firefox.

What is the difference between installing a language pack and a dictionary (e.g. English (United Kingdom)?

Direct link for flash plugin, new on 14 Jan 2014 for FF
    http://download.macromedia.com/get/...ensing/win/install_flash_player_12_plugin.exe

To zoom in or out, hold down the ctrl key and click + or - sign or ctrl key and use the mouse scroll wheel.

I installed an addon that gives me a value for each site and remembers it for 6 months so I can have different values at different sites.
    addon nosquint: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/nosquint/
If you read up and decide you want to use any addon, click the "add to firefox" button. It will download and a box with an install button will appear. Click install and then it will tell you for it to be added, you have to restart the browser. When it restarts, all the tabs you had before the browser closed will again be there.

A language pack includes everything a person would need to view applications in their native language (menus, lists, static text, pop up information, etc.) It also includes proofing tools like dictionary, spell checker, etc.

A dictionary is just a dictionary.

http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/ If you prefer, Firefox in English (British) is available. Scroll down a bit.
Just uninstall Firefox in Programs and Features but do not delete the data!!! By not deleting the data of your Firefox your Firefox profile will be preserved. Then install Firefox in your language.

I'm not entirely sure what you are asking but I'll give it a shot. MSIE and FF use different distributions of Flash Player. Installing Flash for MSIE will not enable FF to play Flash content. In order to do that you have to install Flash Player for FF/Mozilla/Opera/Netscape.
