..... but it is in Firefox and Chrome, on a machine running XP Pro SP3.

This started a few days ago, my Yahoo Mail page displaying a window declaring that "We're experiencing some technical difficulties... " and "Temporary error: 14".

On my other machine, running XP Home SP3, no such problem exists, Yahoo Mail being accessible in all three browsers.

What can be wrong with IE8 on the affected machine?

It must have been a temporary problem with their server. I went into Yahoo! Mail in IE8 under Win XP Pro SP3 and was able to log in without problem (see att'd).

Perhaps you don't understand what I wrote?

Whatever problem befell Yahoo may well have been temporary - that's explicit in the fact that I can read my mail in all three browsers on the other machine and in Firefox and Chrome on this one, but I can't in IE8 on this one, which continues to display the error window.

On patch Tuesday, which of the Windows updates did you get? There have been reported issues with at least one of them (KB2862330). Microsoft reportedly released a revision that was supposed to resolve the issues with that update. But, others have un-installed it or done a System Restore to a point just prior to installing that update.

Also, if you're running ESET AntiVirus, try turning off ESET Antivirus and Malwarebytes real-time scanners and then install the update. After installation, turn scanners on again. There is a known issue with this update not installing correctly in the presence of antivirus software, especially ESET (courtesy of rustysavage in another thread).

Automatic updates are disabled on both my machines. Doing this has eliminated a problem, on this one, of almost 100% c.p.u. use by one of Microsoft's services. There seems little point in enabling it on the other.

I go to Microsoft's update page approximately weekly, look for high priority updates and download/installing any I find. I don't look at, or remember, their numbers, but searching this machine for installed updates reveals a couple of dozen or so, but not KB2862330.

No, I'm not. The only antivirus enabled is Microsoft's Security Essentials.

I have Malwarebyte's free edition installed but nor running permanently. I run it every few days, likewise a few of the well known on-line scanners.

We can't guess what might be wrong but you can do the troubleshooting. Open IE 8 on both computers and compare ALL the settings.
Since it is not a problem with Yahoo and it only is a problem with one browser, there might be some setting in IE that needs to be changed.

While you have IE 8 open, click the gear icon (over to the right) and select Manage Addons. Compare these between the two computers, just in case an addon is causing the problem.

Enabled add-ons in IE8 are the same on both machines and the IE8 versions are identical.

I've reset IE8's security options to their defaults and restored advanced settings on the affected one. No change I'm afraid.

I can't think of any other settings.

I suspect that I'm missing something.

Then, maybe the issue is not worth the time needed to resolve it. Just use Firefox or Chrome to access Yahoo Mail, or use the other computer. I'm sure you know Windows XP is approaching end of support from Microsoft, except that they have extended updates for MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials).

I agree. Yahoo has been screwing a lot of things up lately, not just Ymail. They'll probably get it fixed eventually, but it would have been nice if they didn't break it in the first place.

I want to solve the problem, not hide it.

Of course I do, but I have no intention of replacing my computers or their operating systems. For one, I simply can't afford to, and two, judging by what I have read, the newer operating systems have been heavily criticised for all manner of reasons. No thank you.

Yes, I've trawled the net too.

I really can't say, but am disposed to believe it's the particular installation of IE8 on this machine since it's fine on the other installation.

I have just re-installed IE8, on top of the existing one - since there is not, apparently, any way of uninstalling it. I have disabled all the fancy bits, as I have done when I have previously had to reinstall it, but I still have Temporary error 14.

The disc I have for XP is a recovery disc. I have tried running the system file check, but even though some files are being read from it, there comes a point where it rejects that disc, asking for the XP Pro SP3 disc. I forget the actual wording but I'm sure you know what I mean.

If I could locate a reasonably priced new original XP Pro SP3 disc, with C.O.A., I would buy it and start from scratch.

I cast my vote for Yahoo and not your IE 8.

Ok, I will just have to wait and see.

I really don't have the experience/knowledge to understand why this should be, but hope you're right.

From personal experience based on using Yahoo email almost daily, since October they tweak things and break things.
I used to be able to block domains before the October "new" Yahoo; they tweaked and then I could no longer do it. They tweaked again and I could block domains for a few days until they did some more tweaking and once again broke it. Again they did something last Friday because I've been able to add domains to the block list again. I'm sure it will go away in a day or two when someone decides to tweak again. ;)
It's interesting because you don't know what will work and what won't.
They also screwed around with the login and you had to jump through hoops for it to work. Then they tweaked and it was back to the original way.

We have politicians who may well have used Yahoo as a training ground :-D

I have now acquired an O.E.M. c.d. of XP Pro and run a system file check.

Since doing that I still can't read mail in Yahoo but the error number is now 3, not 14.

Thank you plodr, I flushed IE's cache, as suggested in that link and it seems to have fixed the problem.
