    Hi,
If you are setting up a new system may I recommed a very useful program, it's called STARTUP MONITOR, you can find it in the programs listed on MG start page, you need to make this the first program that you install on your new sytem, after you install the OS, it tells you what programs are being installed and gives you the opportunity to say yes or no. I have managed to stop a lot of rubbish being installed. it's of no use if you have installed all your programs, it must be loaded first. it operates in the background monitoring all installations.
Keep out the junk use this program.
    Wal

Startup Monitor is obsolete (no development since 2007)
The developer, even says so http://www.mlin.net/

A program for newer versions of Windows is Bill P's WinPatrol.

One of the tabs kets you control the startup programs

I ran Mike Lin's Startup Monitor and Startup Control Panel on computers up to and including XP. I now run WinPatrol on the XP and Win 7 computers.

OK, first off, thanks for the thought and the effort. Who doesn't like tips on good freeware. However, if you make a recommendation for a program that you want to share with others, please included a link to that program's download page on Major Geeks website (if possible). This particular program (StartupMonitor) does not appear to be available for download on the Major Geeks website. Do you know where you downloaded your copy of the program?

I stumbled across the homepage for this program, thanks to a 2007 post by ploder. The program hasn't been developed beyond Win XP. Not sure of the year that the author stopped development but it was pre-Vista. The program runs in the background and monitors attempts by other apps at adding autorun items to the registry and startup folders (much like WinPatrol or Spybot S&R in that respect). However, beyond that function, StartupMonitor doesn't monitor the installation of other apps, nor provide users any additional opportunities for opting in or out of anything during the installation of new software.

BTW, oxooxo, there are programs that allow users to view everything in their autostart list and toggle individual items on or off (or outright delete them). Therefore, it's not crucial that you catch every autorun item on install. Take a look at Microsoft's freeware AutoRuns app:

Well I was absolutley sure that I got it from MG, my mistake, I will try the other programs mentioned, what a pity it has not been updated for win 7&8, I have been able to stop a lot of progs being started with it and I use win 7 64bit.:-o

I've been using Bill P Studio's WinPatrol since it first was introduced. I paid the one-time registration fee for WinPatrol Plus years ago — it's good for life. I don't run my computer without it. It has allowed me to prevent crapware on numerous occasions. Another application I use is Spyware Blaster to protect my browsers.

Wally, although unlikely, it's possible that we are talking about two different programs. "Startup Monitor" isn't exactly an original name for a program. You may well have downloaded the program from the Major Geeks website in the past. Some programs get removed from the site for various reasons, so you're not going crazy ;)

If the program works for you, and it does exactly what you want it to do, then great; keep using it. Nevertheless, I think that the AutoRuns app would interest you, or anyone else who's concerned with the apps that launch at Windows startup.

Once again, these startup-monitoring or service-monitoring programs are ones I absolutely HATE. They enrage me.

Their NEED to exist enrages me.

Just like the bleepin' UNINSTALLERS. All because Microsoft can't even get its own staff to write using Windows Standards! And then every other program developer takes shortcuts and uses "Microsoft" as their excuse for not doing Good Jobs. Grrr.

(I still use 2003's DVD SHRINK by the way. What's funny is to run across some commercial DVD that get tossed out by a modern decrypter during tests, only to have DVD SHRINK handle it just fine. Old dogs and their too-old-tricks are sometimes pretty clever after all. Oh well... I'm still impressed that a Win98-SE Dell notebook with 8k video plays every DVD just fine. 8k. Who'da thunk it?)
