My 11 year old did her first belt test today in Taekwondo. She finds out next week if she will receive her yellow belt.
I am so proud of her; she gave it her all. :cool

    Awesome!

The first test is always the hardest, because it is nerve-wracking.

Nice to see kids involved in activities other than playing video games.

    Awesome!

Just curious, why does it take a week, back in the day, when we tested, pass or fail was known after the test?

    But good stuff! :cool

    Good one hitest :cool
Best of luck on the result and it is great to see your daughter is doing an active sport that strengthens both body and mind :-D I wish her well in her journey :cool

I am with Fred on why the wait :confused
Maybe they do things different these days but when I used to do judo we found out our results when it was entered in the record book straight after the test then the following week we got the certificate after it was filled in and signed ;)

Depends on the school. Jenna knows the day of. Her cousins go to a school where they don't know for weeks.

Weeks? Strange. I guess they have to scan the test results, then have them evaluated, then an email will be sent. Progress in the paperless world. ;)

She will know on Monday or Tuesday if she passed. In my opinion I think she passed. :)

Sorry. My initial post was a bit vague. She should know on Monday or Tuesday.

No need to apologize, was just wondering why a pass/fail was not given that day. That is how we did it in the old days, in the caves. :-D

She passed!!! I am so proud of her. I think I was more nervous than her waiting for the results to be announced.

She is more motivated than ever to keep training. I am very happy for her. I would not be surprised if she goes all the way to black belt. Time will tell. :)

If she makes it to red, I bet she will go all the way. I've found, at least with this school, that blue belt is what weeds everyone out.

Of the 20-30 people that started with my daughter, only 2 remain in addition to her. Of those two, she is now 2 ranks ahead of one, and 1 rank ahead of the other. All of them made it to yellow, 2/3 made it to green, 4 or 5 made it to blue. Half of those quit about 3 months into blue, after their red stripe testing.

In a class ahead of Jenna, most of the blue belts quit, and a good chunk of the red belts quit as well.

    Way to go Lisa :-D
Hitest you must be so proud. Plenty of hard work ahead for Lisa but it will be worth it as she progresses through the ranks :cool

Yes. That is similar to what my Master said to me over 30 years ago. My Master said over the years that he had taught over 10,000 students, but, only 20 students attained the rank of black belt.

Yeah the difficulty increases a ton once you get to that halfway point. In this case, it was blue belt at my daughter's school. If you get past blue belt, you are fine, but the trick is getting past it. There is a whole new level of control, flexibility, and power needed. I think kids probably find the latter hard. This is when they start breaking boards, which requires speed and power. If you lack either, it hurts...a lot.

Jenna is fully committed and even knows what month of what year she will have her black belt.

Awesome! I am noticing that Lisa has an improved attitude towards training now that she has passed her initial test. She knows that she has new forms and techniques to learn. Onward and upward. :)

Jenna's attitude is generally good, as long as the positive reinforcement is there. If I stop paying attention during class, or stop helping her train, or if she continually gets hurt sparring (this happens a lot sometimes), then she starts to slack and shrug her shoulders at it.

The day before yesterday, she was the senior student in class, which means she sets the pace and speed of others. She is also supposed to be the shining example. She messed up on several of her forms and it was a bit embarrassing for her. So I practiced with her yesterday and really focused on just her. She did a complete 180. Last night, her forms looked sharper and stronger than most of the black belts. Flawless execution, and that was just from us practicing for 40 minutes before class.

It is crazy how much positive reinforcement really gets these kids going.

Something I learned the hard way that you probably already know but I figured I would mention it. Have her practice forms starting in every direction. The kids at this school get so used to one direction that when they test or go to tournament and they start going a different direction, they end up getting lost in the complex forms. Its not a big deal with simple forms that are linear or a rectangle, but when you have forms going in an 'I' shape or rectangular figure '8', it gets tough.
