    :-D

At the moment we have gotten a foot of snow so far. We are in a 'lull' as the news is referring to it. We'll be getting more heavy snow later on...maybe another 3-5 inches. :cry

I want to be somewhere warm right now...although I'm not complaining too much since we have power. We lost power last week for 3 days with subfreezing temps. That was horrible.

I realize it makes me a horrible person and I'm probably going straight to hell, but I have been sitting here glorying in the fact that this particular storm rolled through south of me. We'll have more coming (and there were a total of 11 days between December 1 and February 7 when it wasn't snowing here), but for now it's kind of nice *not* being the one getting buried.

Which is my roundabout way of saying I can totally empathize, and I hope you stay warm and safe and keep your power. ;)

Have you bought a generator yet?

  4. LauraR

LauraR MajorGeeks Super-Duper Administrator Staff Member

Nope. :( It all came too close to the last storm and this one was just snow, so I figured there was a very good chance we wouldn't lose our power, which so far we haven't. Both the generators and the electricians are charging top dollar. I'm going to wait until spring to get one. Everyone else in my family bought one and they all live within 5 miles of me, so if we do lose it between now and then, I figure we have somewhere to go now.

It makes you a very smart woman to be happy you aren't getting this right now. I know the whole country has gotten slammed this winter. It's been crazy in the US. Enjoy your no snow, Beth. :)

Believe me, that played majorly into my decision to wait and make sure I wasn't getting totally ripped off. LOL

Thanks Em. Are you getting all the rain?

Hey Laura, I'm sending you warm thoughts as in my state (Victoria) we have been having a heatwave and the other day we had over 200 bushfires around our state.
Here is a link to a travel trip blog to Wilson's Promontory in my state. It has some nice beach and bush pics. My parents used to have a holiday house on the beach down at Wilson's Promontory so it brings back many childhood memories of happy times and school holidays playing on the beach :-D

I hope this was a small distraction from your cold demeanour ;)
Wouldn't it be good if you could send us some of your excess cold and we could off load some of our excess heat ;)
    Stay warm and safe:)

A foot of snow? That's all? I've got 4' tall hog panels, and I can see the top six inches. And that's where the snow has been packed down by foot traffic.

Keep safe and Warm Laura, the weather you seem to be getting at present from what I see on UK news is nasty!

We as Emma knows too well, is that we are getting the spin off, from your cold winter weather in the form of high winds and rain, me not so bad, apart from the wind as some houses across from me that back onto the fields have lost roof tiles, we are ok so far.

@oma....that's just crazy. Is that real? I agree...where did they put the snow they plowed out? :confused

Fred, I'm not sure which is more weird or disturbing, the dude on the mower or the creepy laugh of the one on the video.

We got through the storm with our power intact, so all is good. We got about 15 inches. I'm attaching a pic from when my husband used the snowblower on our walk. We're getting more snow right now. Ick!!!

OMG now that's some snow, the UK would come to a grinding halt with only half of that and new agencies would be crying for a national disaster!

    neat pic

We were stuck inside for the day it was snowing since it was literally snowing from 10pm the night before through til the following evening, but my daughter went to school the next day. We have tons of plow trucks in our area so they clear it really well.

Oma.......I recall back in the early '60's we got that much snow in Maryland. One lane plowed and if anyone was driving and met up with someone going the opposite direction, we had to back up until we found a place where they could pass us. It was a childs dream......best sledding ever!!!!!

The creepy laugh makes the video in my opinion. I suspect those two don't get to 'town' very often. :-D

The cold and sleet have finally left Houston (for now, anyway) and the temps are supposed to be in the mid to upper 70s (F) next week. :clap

None too soon. I received a major owie on my electric bill this week. During the winter, it normally runs about $125. This month it was $260. :eek

Yup, beats me too and almost looks unreal. How the heck could the snow wall be so straight and therefore thought it could have been photoshopped. Then the link where I found the pics looked quite genuine.
That's quite a pic! Hope for you that the snow will let up. Can't imagine having to remove that much snow without a snowblower.

Must have been an absolute mess then, great for kiddies. Yes, I remember also here in TO some decades ago about a snow storm. The traffic wasn't going anywhere so I walked home after work for at least 5 miles in the falling snow until I got to a plaza to warm up a bit and called my hubby to pick me up and he could pick me up there. Lucky that he got home. There was no sense in calling him sooner because the traffic wasn't moving an inch. Next day when I showed up at work (by bus) most people weren't there. Mgr. was so angry that the ones who hadn't shown up were deducted 1 day of their holidays. That was the worst snow storm in abt. 30+ years. Those events certainly stick out in our memories eh? :)

I've seen pictures taken by people I know of very similar snow, so I'm sure they're real. They've got ungodly huge plows that can throw ridiculously far and high, then they go back through and clean up the edges (if necessary) to make sure it doesn't fall back down into the road. It's flat like that because that's the best way to pack it safely to make sure it stays up. Basically, it's the big version of my sidewalk. LOL

I am! It's been warm here for a couple of days (as defined by being above 20F), and we've only had a few inches of snow, which means we're down to about 2 1/2 feet in the yard! I'm pretty darn excited. And next week they're talking 40 degrees! Maybe some of the mountain from the driveway being plowed will melt down so we can actually see the road from the living room again. :-D

I remember in 1978 we had an ice storm followed by at least one blizzard, and our house was buried. Couldn't see out the windows, the top of the drift in front was about 6 feet up the roof. Our entire neighbourhood was closed for over a week before plows could get here, so my dad had to park down at the bank (about 3/4 mile) and snowshoe in with supplies on a toboggan. That was the worst snow we'd had until this year, but this year we've just had steady, constant snow instead of getting dumped on all at once. There's been snow on the ground since the third week of November, and we never really had a January thaw.

Lots of places getting ice, snow and cold temperatures out of their normal range this winter. Hope this is not a sign of a permanent weather pattern change.:(

Speaking of snow/ice, we have had a mixture of warm(32-39F) to cold(-7-8F) weather
most of my neighbors have cleared their drives of all snow
I tossed off enough snow to pull my car in/out and yet stil have thick snow to walk on.
I learned how valuable snow was when I when to take out my garbage sacks and I had to use my neighbors "cleared" drive to get to the street where the sacs go
Unlike my drive, full of snow, his drive looked clear, but I found it was actually coated with invisible ice which caused me to slip and land on my butt and ended up cutting my knee very nicely
Snow is much better than ice.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

We (Marion County SC) got a little over three quarters of an inch of ice. We lost power @ 1530 hrs 12 Feb - we just got it turned back on @ 1300 today.

It's been a helluva few days.

Hope everyone got through this one okay - I hear another one's coming. :(

Just received a weather alert notice, and thank goodness...I was all worried the snow was gonna melt! Not only did we get about 4 inches overnight, but we're supposed to get snow falling at between 1/2 and 1 inch per hour starting some time late tonight through tomorrow night. :banghead

Well...it's been warm for a couple of days, as predicted...and now the melting snow has nowhere to go. There is flooding. There are roof collapses (although most of those in the last week have been due to snow weight, the water is going to claim quite a few more). Tomorrow afternoon we are supposed to get rain; lots and lots of rain. Changing to freezing rain, and then more snow, and then the temperature is supposed to plummet. :*** :crybaby :***

Of course, even with the warming and melting, since we got SLAMMED with snow on Monday, it's still well over three feet deep in my yard. We won't discuss the piles from plowing and shoveling.

We are supposed to be in the high 70's or 80's with a 'cold front' coming in closer to the weekend. Then it will rain.

I keep on hearing about really great jobs in North Dakota, but I am a child of the South...

  36. LauraR

We've been relatively good here. Warmer temps with some snow melting which is great. We are getting the flooding, so that's good. They came with plows to make sure our drainage grates were clear.

I'm headed to DC this weekend where it's supposed to get into the 60s. :)

I'm sure it'll get colder again, but I'll take this while it lasts.

The rain melted the snow so of course the forecast is more snow in a few days.
