I am not a technical person.
I have a Dell Inspiron that uses XP. I bought a new Dell desktop with 7 and a transfer cable that was supposed to "transfer all data including email, address books, etc. There is nothing complicated, like games, on my old computer, just email and documents.
Easy transfer was installed on my old computer and I hooked up the Easy Transfer cable, following what I thought were very simple instructions. The message I keep receiving is "Easy transfer unable to connect"
I've used different ports, re-booted, and the same occurs.
Any advice for this novice will be sincerely appreciated. Google hasn't helped.
    Thanks

Re: data transfer - additional info

Just stumbled on some new info. Old computer is running a 32 bit version of Windows and new computer is a 64 bit version. Would that be the problem? Is it fixable so that I can transfer the data?
    Again, thanks

    Hi George

Do you have a large USB pen (16 -32GB preferably, or one the size slightly larger than what Easy Transfer says you have data to transfer from XP)? Actually could be to a USB Hard Drive if you have one.

As transferring via USB is easier and more fool proof I have found and the method I use.

No 32bit to 64bit should be fine as its only data.

If you wish to use the cable way then uninstall any Antivirus and 3rd party firewall on your Windows XP machine and disable whats on your Windows 7 PC and try to connect. Also check on both machines with the cable plugged in Device Manager and do you have any yellow ! marks by any devices? if so what.

**If its the USB Transfer cable then double click it and choose Update Driver Software and then choose Browse my Computer and past in this line C:\Windows\System32\Drivers and click Next to install a driver, then try again

    David:
Thank you. The problem was with the firewall on the new computer. I had disabled the Windows firewall, but the computer came with a trail for McAfee and I didn't disable that firewall. Once disabled, data transfer worked. Again, thanks. You guys are a great, great help to people like me.
    George
