Where can I download a safe free version of Windows 8?

The only reason I want to download Windows 8 or perhaps any other version of Windows is because I have XP now and have no choice but to abandon it soon. Thus I did a Google search and found lots of sites that supposedly offer a free Windows 8 download. The 2 things that hit my head though are 1) is it really free? And 2) I'm weary of any site I download anything from, I hate to think what else is attached to this supposed free version of Windows. I could just picture popups galore after I download this supposed free version of Windows 8.

Btw, if you want to be sure you are safe after downloading Windows, I'd suggest you buy it. Downloading any illegal software is going to put your machine at risk.
