    Welcome to Major Geeks!

There is a little bit of junkware to remove and we will do that below, but this is not liklely to help too much with your PCs performance. This is more likely due to PC specs which show the below
    Code:
    Processor x86 Family 15 Model 43 Stepping 1 AuthenticAMD ~2004 Mhz
    Total Physical Memory 1,024.00 MB
    Available Physical Memory 243.25 MB
This is a rather old and slow processor. And you have about 1/3 of the memory that I recommend now for more efficient running of Windows XP SP3.

Also problems can be do to items you are running at startup ( not really a malware forum topic ) and always allow to run even when not being used. The below items are what am referring too.
That Amazon program has been know to hog system resources at least during PC startup. Is your main problem when you startup your PC?

Also the below can be a drag, do you really use this external PC software support company? Have you ever used it?
Do you use the below online support items? I don't think CenturyLink is even supported anymore.
    CenturyLink Personal Digital VaultT
    Qwest QuickAssist Desktop Tools
    Qwest QuickCare

Now let's cleanup some junkware and a couple of really unncessary startup programs which should help your performance a little.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Uninstall the below programs. If you do not find them or they will not uninstall, just keep going.
    Java(TM) 6 Update 26
Now install the current version of Sun Java from:

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://toolbar.inbox.com/search/ie.aspx?tbid=80364&lng=en
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,CustomizeSearch = http://toolbar.inbox.com/help/sa_customize.aspx?tbid=80364
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://toolbar.inbox.com/search/ie.aspx?tbid=80364&lng=en
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://toolbar.inbox.com/help/sa_customize.aspx?tbid=80364

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Google Update] "C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe" /c

    O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [DWQueuedReporting] "C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\DW\dwtrig20.exe" -t (User 'Default user')

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Run OTM.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of
      the code box

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MoveIt!.png button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.
Now you need to run MSConfig and put your PC into normal startup. You should not be using it as a personal long term startup manager. The above fix permanently remove several unnecessary startup and delete some from MSconfig already too.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • the JRT.TXTlog
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I apologize for the long delay in answering or responding to your help/suggestions/directions/etc. This is my girlfriends computer and I told her to check email and spam for reply which of course she missed/forget/spaced/etc. So I finally did the checking myself and am in the process of running the various programs and following your directions. Most of the answers to do you really run this or need this are all no. I'll finish the removal stuff and get back to you. THANKS!

Ok, everything is done on your instruction list with the exception of re-installing Java JRE. In answer to your original questions:
    1. No to Qwest and CenturyLink - don't use them.
    2. Don't use the external PC support either.
    3. Amazon was uninstalled while I was uninstalling some of those other things in control panel.

System is running somewhat better but still considerable lag when trying to open Google Chrome and other things. Will get some more ram. After the cleanup 2 different things appeared in the system tray, Extender Resource Monitor and Realtek HD Audio Manager. Also, I noted in the startup of MSconfig that the Shop at Home things are running despite uninstalling it via Control Panel. Further, we're running the CenturyLink Norton Online Antivirus version 19.9.1.14. Wondering your opinion on that and your views of Bitdefender which I've been running on a netbook with good results. So there you have it. Let me know and again thanks for your assistance.

I have never really been a fan of Norton but not sure with the bad PC specs that you could run a newer version of any security program without have performance impacts. So you may have to stick with that Norton stuff if it is really supported anymore. I thought that it was not supported and I was going to have you uninstall CenturyLink Personal Digital VaultT

Let's remove some additional items which you say are not being used and also a few other unnecessary startup items.

    Now unintall the below:
    Google Update Helper
    Google Updater
    HP Update
    Qwest QuickAssist Desktop Tools
    Qwest QuickCare

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

Ok last instructions completed. Just fyi I took out a stick of ram 512 MB to match it. I have some at home (this is the girlfriends house) that's the same I believe. Anyway even with less ram it's running waaaaaaayyyyyyyy better! I do think I'm going to whack that Norton and at least try the Bitdefender. Further, did you see the message relating to JRE? Not sure what to do about that. Let me know. Thanks, :major

You don't need another 512 MB. You need 3 GB minimum which means the two 512 MBs need to go. However adding thired 512 is still better than two. ;)

Then as stated. It is just a memory and PC specs issue.

Were you able to uninstall all Java versions completely? Can you also uninstall this >> Java Auto Updater

  12. taschi

    taschi Private E-2

Ok, I'm back. Had to do a little fishin' trip;-) No Java anything in control panel. Added to 2 gig of ram to the other two 512's, so we got 3 gig total now. I'm going to whack Norton too. It seems like it takes forever for it to scan something. Also qoing to whack all the CenturyLink and Qwest crap. Anything else to recommend?

Just the below. Any other issues with Java, you can discuss in the Software Forum as with all other non-malware topics. ;) Greater than 95% of what we did thus far really had nothing to do with malware anyway.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    7. If you are running Win 8, Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below to flush restore points:
      • Refer to the instructions for your WIndows version in this link: Disable And Enable System Restore
      • What we want you to do is to first disable System Restore to flush restore points some of which could be infected.
      • Then we want you to Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
