Still use OE after XP support ends?

This question probably is a dumb one, but here goes. I have a desktop computer with XP and I'm using Outlook Express. I understand there is much concern about the security risks starting April 8. Does this apply to everything connected with being online, such as email? Thanks.

Yes. The longer you use it, the more risk you take.

If you are going to continue using Win XP on the Internet for some time after April 8, be sure to keep an updated anti-virus program active in your computer, especially since you use it for email.

I am going to continue using XPpro until need to change in order to get anything done (much like I did with DOS and Windows95 :) )
...along with Avast, OnlineArmor, Malwarebytes, SUPERAntiSpyware & CCleaner.
Guess, as an old-timer, figure if MS hasnt gotten XP/IE fixed by now, then will need to 'protect' on my own as much as possible.
From all I can find, XP still seems to be the most efficient/simple way to work with a PC... at least for this old-guy.

There seems to be an honest difference of opinion about using the Internet with XP after April 8.

I tried downloading Linux in one of my PC's but since this PC is so slow and pathetic I had no luck downloading online. So I purchased a Linux CD for only $2.49 or something like that. Now I'm waiting for it to arrive and just hope I have better luck with it.

It's really about your own behaviour, particularly on the internet. If you are risk-aware and stick to visiting sites you are confident are OK, and never click on hyperlinks in emails or open attachments unless you are sure about them, and don't use disks or flash drives given to you by others without checking them out first, and check every file you download before opening it, and keep your software updated, your firewall on and your AV updated then odds are you will be fine for as long as you wish. But it isn't entirely risk free.

Do (or dont, whichever applies for sensible internet use) all of the 'above'.
Btw, is anything, on the internet (or otherwise), 'risk-free' ?
    :confused

Do not use it for any financial transactions whatsoever and do not access any email accounts associated with your financial sites.

I sure appreciate all the replies. It seems like it's a "buyer beware" situation in which you might be okay buying the item, but maybe you won't. It's my wife's desktop computer I'm talking about. She just uses it for email and some games that I loaded into it from purchased disks. I do keep her Microsoft Securities Essentials, Malabytes, SuperAntiSpyware and CCleaner up to date and use them regularly, so I think we might be okay with Outlook Express if we use common sense in opening attachments and suspicious emails.

Not sure if MSSE will still be around, unless your referring to a private program.
If not, might consider adding 'Online Armor' to the list.

MS Security Essentials will work through June 2015.
I don't recommend updating from the current version 4.4 to 4.5 now offered through MS Updates. It did two things to one of the XP computers. The tray icon remains orange and the Red Security Shield tells me I have no antivirus installed.
I did not update on the other two XP computers and they are fine. They have the db from today and no problem scanning.
