I have a Toshiba Satellite U845-S406 on Windows 7. It has been fine for about a year; now it shows a blue screen every 15-30 minutes. Somebody told me it was the RAM, but MDSCHED says there are no memory problems.

I have run a couple virus scans with different programs, and registry repairs. They both found some stuff but didn't affect the problem.

    On reboot it says:

    Problem signature:
    Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
    OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3
    Locale ID: 1033

    Additional information about the problem:
    BCCode: 1000007e
    BCP1: FFFFFFFFC0000005
    BCP2: FFFFF8800106A6B0
    BCP3: FFFFF88003987798
    BCP4: FFFFF88003986FF0
    OS Version: 6_1_7601
    Service Pack: 1_0
    Product: 768_1

Files that help describe the problem:
    C:\Windows\Minidump\032814-12168-01.dmp
    C:\Users\Suanne\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-17596-0.sysdata.xml

I have the two files, but I can't open them or attach them.

How do I proceed? Any help would be much appreciated.

are you able to get the stop code from the blue screen??
that would help narrow down the root of the problem.

also here is a few things to try

can you boot into safe mode and it work fine?
do you have the latest drivers for your hardware?
check the system and application logs in event viewer
also try resetting our BIOS and hardware settings to default.
maybe check your hard drive with one of these aas well

The blue screen is only up a couple seconds; no way I can read the stop code. Anyway to freeze it?
Safe mode crashes after a couple minutes! Much worse than normal boot.
I don't know if I have the latest drivers, but the computer is only 18 months old. However when I looked at the hardware, it shows 3 unknown devices with no drivers. That seems significant. It is a laptop, so there have been no hardware changes since I bought it.
I don't know where events viewer is.
I reset the bios to default. I don't know how to reset hardware settings.
I tried CheckDisk 1.4, but it says I don't have the rights to run it.
I ran CHKDSK; but it never gave me results. Are they logged somewhere?

I ran Memtest86. I didn't know how long to let it run, so I run through 3 times with no errors.

I then tried the various device driver programs. Two said I was uptodate; a third said I had 7 devices unplugged, and could fix it for $20. I couldn't find any reference under Hardware/device functions, so it didn't seem like a good investment. I don't even know what unplugged means.

There are three devices that show up as unknown, with no drivers. Would it make sense to delete them and hope windows finds and identifies them? On older computers I could delete devices, but I don't see anything for that now.

Also, under devices, there is a buttom for updating the drivers, but it is grayed out. Does that mean it is current, or something else?

you could try deleting the drivers and restarting it may auto find the drivers but still no guarantee.

what you could try is use the specifications online for your PC and try to narrow down what the drivers could be for, and download them yourself,

    http://support.toshiba.com/support/modelHome?freeText=3386619

you also could just try installing every driver on the Toshiba site for your laptop but i wouldn't recommend this

I deleted them and nothing change. Auto find did nothing.
If I deleted 3 real devices, would the computer work at all? I mean, it goes for 20 minutes and then just crashes, whether I am using it or not. Wouldn't it make a serious difference whether or not it is being used?

I went through about half of the devices and they all have current drivers. I will try the other have eventually, but it is tedious.

    Any other suggestions?

Hi my friend , welcome to MG's :major
What is the name of the unknown devices do you have ? :wave

I don't know the names of the unknown devices; that is why they are unknown.

No, I didn't download the drivers from Toshiba. There were over 50 of them, and I have no idea which are likely to be useful, if any.

It would be tedious, but you would need to list the ones you do have and eliminate the ones you don't need.

When you boot the PC, press F8 then select "Disable automatic restart on system failure", then give us the stop code.

If you are still getting BSOD's. Download WhoCrashed & post the results.

ok as the auto-detect didnt install the drivers we should try the plug and play ID's

    go to device manager
    find the unknown device
    go to properties
    then details tab
then in the drop down menu select hard ware ID's
then write down the Vendor ID and Dev ID
(usually the first set of 4 number(in red below) and the second set of 4 numbers (in blue below))
    e.g. PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_0156&CC_0300

type these into a search engine (google) and it should list the device that it is and you can then get the corresponding drivers

the example above the 8086 is for intel and the 0156 is for a 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller

:) hope this method works for you as after this i am all out of ideas :( :major

    1) I can't look at the unknown devices since I deleted them and they didn't come back.

    2) Whocrashed produced this:
On Sat 3/29/2014 10:55:03 PM GMT your computer crashed
    crash dump file: C:\windows\Minidump\032914-12230-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: iastor.sys (iaStor+0x496B0)
    Bugcheck code: 0x1000007E (0xFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFFF8800129D6B0, 0xFFFFF88003987798, 0xFFFFF88003986FF0)
    Error: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M
    file path: C:\windows\system32\drivers\iastor.sys
product: Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver
    company: Intel Corporation
description: Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver - x64
Bug check description: This indicates that a system thread generated an exception which the error handler did not catch.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: iastor.sys (Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver - x64, Intel Corporation).
    Google query: Intel Corporation SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M

I googled and found that I should have my bios set to RAID. I am not sure that is right, since I don't have RAID, but looked anyhow. I couldn't find anything in bios about RAID, but I did find a setting for Intel Rapid Srorage Technology. It was set to enabled and after 2 hours. I set it to disabled, but it didn't change anything; it still crashed with the same error.

    3) I stopped the blue screen and it says:
    Stop 0x1000007E (0xFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFFF8800129D6B0, 0xFFFFF88003987798, 0xFFFFF88003986FF0)

Ahh, the good ole Intel Software driver. You really do not need it, if you plan on not running a Raid setup. Go ahead and remove it, and the problems should go away.

I had the same issue with a Acer Netbook that we were trying Windows 8 on. Kept getting BSOD's. Found out that it was the same driver. Removed it, and problem went away.

I disabled it in bios and it didn't help. Removing it is more effective and wholly harmless? I would hate to have my harddrive not work afterwards.

  18. brownizs

It will not affect your hard drive.

I uninstalled the driver and rebooted.
It said it had installed the driver and I had to reboot.
I tried to reboot, but Windows wouldn't load.
It went to auto repair which told me to restore to an earlier system, which I did.

It is now the same as before; going to blue screen after a while.
    Any ideas?

I cannot remember if I mentioned this. I had the same issue with the Acer Netbook that I had, when I upgraded to Windows 8. Never had it with Windows 7.

Have you updated to the latest bios firmware yet? http://support.toshiba.com/support/modelHome?freeText=3386619 New one is dated 3/10/14. Try going into Device Manager, and do a complete uninstall of the driver & device. Then boot into Safe mode, and install the latest driver from the link I posted.

This is the latest RST as of 12/12/13. http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...g&wapkw=intel+rapid+storage+technology+driver

Let me know if it works. Make sure you choose the f6flpy-x64.zip file.

I looked at the bios update, but it requires a CD and I don't have one.

I completely uninstalled the drive and device, but it as soon as I boot into Safe Mode it reinstalls. Can I delete the drive from the harddrive, or just replace it with the one from your download?

BTW, when it reinstalls the driver it says it has to restart. But then it crashes on restart and has to do a system restore to work.

This is actually my son's computer at college. Well actually his mothers. He cracked his screen so we gave him his mothers. I replaced the screen. When this problem happened we gave him his old one back. It took 2 weeks for him to crack the screen again. Looks like he will be using computers in the library for the rest of the semester unless I can get this fixed.

I was able to get an external CD drive. But what happens if it crashes during a bios update?! I thought that was a huge no-no.

It is. Could lead to massive badness if you're unluccky.

Did you actually get the Intel driver fully uninstalled? When you right-click to uninstall it from Device Manager, there is a checkbox for removing driver software. You must check this box and remove the files/software. If you don't, the Intel driver will reinstall itself next reboot.

I agree with whoever said it before, you don't need the Intel RST driver unless you plan to run RAID. Rip it out! :)

  24. Toller

    Toller Private E-2

Well, actually I left clicked on the device, and then left clicked on "driver", and left clicked on "delete driver". It then asks if I want to delete the software as well and I checked that box. I think that is equivalent to right-clicking to uninstall it.
So yes, I did remove the driver software also, but it reinstalled anyhow.

Just for the sake of completeness I tried it your way, but got exactly the same results.

I noticed that neither of my other two W7 computers have such a device in device manager, and neither has a bios entry for it.

I am beginning to think it needs the device loaded because of the bios entry; even if it is disabled in that bios entry.
Any way to take it out of bios?
Presumably not, but could I manually change the driver on the machine to the driver I downloaded? It claims it is current, but maybe it is corrupted?

Your method for uninstall should give the same result as right-clicking.

You will need to do the uninstall process for every device that uses the Intel driver, not just the one drive, or it won't actually uninstall. If you look in Device Manager again, you have a category called "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers". Uninstall the Intel driver for every single item in that category. You may have to do this process for everything listed under "storage drives" as well.

I don't see anything like that. I have included my complete device manager. Is there something on it I should delete?

Aha. You've got "disk drives" instead. Uninsall those drivers, and the storage controller. :)

IMPORTANT: if your drives are in RAID mode you need the driver and it will reinstall itself no matter what.

It deletes them, but on reboot it crashes immediately. Automatic fix restores the last system. So nothing changes.

I am about ready to put it on ebay as slightly used.

Ouch. What sucks is those Intel drivers are most likely intimately involved with whatever is causing the crashing. Any chances you're able to just wipe and reinstall Windows on the thing? After full back-up of your important data, of rcourse.
