Hello my name is Nancy. I am new to join the form but have been a lurker for year. I am in the process of changing all of my PC's over to Zorin 8.1 but I am new to Linux. I am having a problem with my Lenovo S10, Zorin did not find the Wi-Fi and I have been unable to find drives let alone know how to install it.

That being said I love Zorin! I have installed it on 3 PC's already and this is the first problem I have not been able to fix myself. Some of the terminology is different but it's just like moving to a new Windows OS.

Thank you for you time in advance.

    PS: Love the site! ;)

The wireless chipset in the Lenovo S10 appears to be problematic in Linux. A quick google reveals numerous people have had similar issues. Fortunately, there's a fix to get it working. Based on other forum posts/solutions, the guy in post #4 of this Zorin thread is providing the same solution that others have indicated works for them:

In a nutshell, plug ethernet cable from your modem/router into your laptop. This is CRITICAL, as you need internet access to fix your internet.

Locate the terminal in Zorin, copy the following command and paste into the Zorin terminal and hit enter

    Code:
    sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source
Then copy the following command and paste into the terminal and hit enter

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-lpphy-installer
Once the firmware installation is complete, unplug the ethernet cable and your wireless connection should flutter to life and ask for connection credentials. If it does not, you may have to reboot for the wireless module to be activated.

BTW, Zorin is an EXCELLENT choice for a Linux-newbie/Windows-migrator! Glad to hear you like it, and congrats on the successful switchover before the WinXP d-day deadline!

Thank you so much for your help unfortunatly it did not work. The following is the message:

    nancy@Lenovo-S10:~$ sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-lpphy-installer
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
Package firmware-b43-lpphy-installer is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However, the following packages replace it:
    firmware-b43-installer
E: Package 'firmware-b43-lpphy-installer' has no installation candidate
    nancy@Lenovo-S10:~$

Any other ideas? lol I feel like I have been launch back to the 80's and dos

Zorin is telling us that the requested package no longer exists in the repositories and has been replaced by the package in bold above. copy and paste this instead, in the terminal:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer

YAY! Thanks for sharing your successful outcome! Most of the world is familiar with Windows, and Zorin does such a good job emulating the appearance and behavior of Windows that I often suggest and recommend Zorin to folks who want to get away from WinXP. I really do believe it is the best choice for most Windows users trying to replace Windows. And everyone I've helped to switch over has commented that they actually like Zorin better than Windows! Go figure...

Also, for those who aren't aware, Zorin has a version for lower-spec machines such as single-core and/or netbook machines. I have installed Zorin Lite on these machines and Zorin Lite typically is lighter and snappier on these low-spec computers than the Windows system it replaced.

    Zorin can be downloaded here:
    http://zorin-os.com/free8.html

The "main" version of Zorin is accessed with the "Core" tab, while Zorin Lite is accessed from the "Lite" tab. I have no experience with the "Educational" or "Gaming" versions, FWIW.

    Enjoy!
