Google redirecting to yahoo

    Hi all,

Recently when I type something into the bar on google chrome, it would redirect to yahoo search results. I deleted all the other search engines in the settings but no success. I also tried firefox and internet explorer and both have the same problem. Searches are sometimes yahoo results and sometimes google results.

    I am on Windows 8, 64 bit

Attached are some of the logs that are in the FAQs/guide that's stickied.
The only step I didn't do is the one for MGTools.
Per the instructions, I downloaded it and saved it to (C:). When I double clicked to run it, it made a folder called MGlogs. When opening that folder, there is only one file, named "GetUnKey." At this point it's not like what the instructions says so I decided to make this post.

Also, I originally ran all the steps before MGTools yesterday and it didn't redirect for a while but came back after a few times. I will attach the "GetUnKey" file that I got from MGTools in the next post

    Welcome to Major Geeks!
Please see the instructions for running MGtools and attaching the log. The log file is MGlogs.zip located at either C:\MGlogs.zip or on your Desktop.

We need this log to continue. If the MGlogs.zip file was not created or is incomplete then answer the below:

    - Did you have problems running MGtools.exe? Was all protection software shutdown and did you have UAC disabled and did you allow it to run?
    - Do you see the C:\MGtools folder?

Based on what is attached thus far, it does not look like you have a malware redirect problem

Okay then you have to wait for it to finish running. That is just the beginning. It will tell you when finished. Or are you saying that there is never anymore progress than that?

Wow, didn't realize it wasn't done. Anyway, it made a folder called MGtTools and I attached the zip file in the folder

It is explained in the instructions given in the READ & RUN ME where it gave you the Using MGtools link. ;)

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Run OTM.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of
      the code box
    Code:
    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Files
    C:\Users\SHIJI_000\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Web Data
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\*.*
    C:\Users\SHIJI_000\AppData\Local\Temp\*.*

    :Reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes]
    "DefaultScope"="{0D43C847-F32F-443C-9BCD-C7A657552530}"
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes]
    "DefaultScope"="{0D43C847-F32F-443C-9BCD-C7A657552530}"
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{0633EE93-D776-472f-A0FF-E1416B8B2E3A}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{0D43C847-F32F-443C-9BCD-C7A657552530}]
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [start explorer]

    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MoveIt!.png button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • the JRT.TXT log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

If still having a problem with Chrome, please run the instructions in the below:
    Reset Chrome to Defaults

    Files attached.

So between my post on 4/25 to my post on 4/27, browser was fine with google searches from everything i type. I thought it was fixed and didn't think of it much further. Then on the 27th, it started to redirect to yahoo again which is when i ran MgTools and attached the folder in the earlier post.

As of right now, it seems fine as the search results are coming up as google.

Okay this was probably not a malware issue. More likely you somehow changed your default search engine to Yahoo.

Since you are not really having malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Hey, shortly after my last post here the searches have gone back to yahoo results. Should I still do 7 steps you listed or follow another set of steps?

See the last instructions in message # 7 about resetting Chrome. I still don't think it is malware. Malware would not change you from on legit search engine to another. It would change you to some junk search site where they collect revenue from or where there is malware on the search engine page.
