Say what you will about cats ...I know there is a lot of dislike towards them from some people (not from me...I love them), but this is really amazing. I saw it while reading the news just now.

WARNING: It was disturbing to a certain degree, and then the very end of the video shows the wound, so if you don't want to see that, x out after the 'Thankfully, it wasn't worse'.

(this was from a home surveillance camera)

Proof positive that cats are smart and have a bond with their people friends. Started to say owners but anyone that has a cat knows you don't own it, it owns you!

Wow Laura, that is one gutsy quick thinking cat ;)
Maybe the cat thinks it is a lion or tiger and nobody told it otherwise LOL
Whatever you say about cats this loyal cat saved the boy from a very nasty situation:cool
I hope the dog owner gets prosecuted and heavily fined as irresponsible dog owners get responsible dog owners a bad name. We have an 8 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy (our 2nd ridgeback) and her obedience training started the day she came to us at 8 weeks old and although still an exuberant playful puppy, she knows not to bite or jump on people and you can take food or her toys out of her mouth without any reaction ;)
Some people shouldn't be allowed to keep animals but that may be a HBT rolleyes

Ooohh that wound looked bad but it really could have been a lot worse, like she said, if it weren't for the cat.

Man that cat is a beast :-D

Upon watching it a second time; why did the mom run over and then run away without the kid? I thought she ran over to pick him up but then she runs away and a few seconds later the kid runs after her. :confused

If you meet a dog that voluntarily takes on a cat (at least one with claws), you are also meeting a very stupid dog. :-D Most of them have the heart of a lion.

I had a cat. The cat definitely owns their people. LOL

    A beast no doubt!

    Here's the story I saw: http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/...at-dog-attack-bakersfield-california/9084549/

The mother was chasing the dog off the property and apparently also got bitten. The neighbor, who's dog it is, voluntarily quarantined the dog.

Not a fan of cats, but dat one bad azz feline. :-D

Sadly, the dog should be put down, owner of said dog needs some 'work' as well.

Cat got lucky, but glad it did.

That makes a lot more sense. In the video, it looks like she got scared and took off for the door and I was like what kind of parent would do that?

I read in another article that the SPCA has the dog and it will be quarantined for 10 days and then euthanized due to it's continually aggressive nature.

I had to look up why they would quarantine it before euthanizing. It has to do with rabies and seeing if the dog shows signs so the person can be treated for it if they do.

I keep watching that video. 'bad azz feline' is the perfect description. God, that kid is lucky. Seeing how that dog took hold of him, he would have been seriously injured or killed if not for that cat.

    True story.

If you watch closely, after the cat tackles the dog like a football player, she ever so quickly turns back as if to see if the boy is ok before continuing to chase the dog off. That cat was not messing around!

Yes, that dog was hunting, would never be able to trust that one again. Trying to be PC here... lets just say the owners of the dog are not good dog owners?

Thumbs up for the cat, he/she was not playing around. :cool

I've known good people with bad dogs and bad people with good dogs. It doesn't usually happen but it does happen.

Just my opinion, but it does not 'just happen' if you train/confine your dog. That dog was defending his territory. And that ain't right.

    Bad owner(s).

+1 Fred and I totally agree. There are very few bad dogs, just bad owners ;)

@Laura we don't have rabies in our country so I googled and discovered that:-
    (a) Rabies is a very nasty disease and that once established almost always results in a horrible death.
    (b) We do have it here in Australia as some types of bats carry a variant of the main virus but we don't have it in other animals. The US has it in any number of animals ranging from dogs to cats to squirrels to skunks to rats to bats to monkeys to bears. Pretty much any warm blooded animal is a potential carrier that can pass it to humans with a scratch or a bite.
Makes sense why they quarantined the dog in this context.
See you learn something new every day :-D:cool

I naturally disdain dogs because of stuff like this but agree that it's definitely the owners this time (as with most cases, imo)

Maxwell Fredrick is passed out on the couch. He stays in a fenced in yard, or on a leash with me attached. Oddly, the smaller the person Maxwell meets, the more gentile he is.

Dog in said video was hunting, "protecting" his territory. You get a 50+ pound dog, you better know how to keep/train them.

Personally, I like how the cat doesn't bother running after the dog once the dog has left the boy alone. It runs back to its human friend, and then gets between the kid and the dog to keep the dog away.

It's actually a known fact to us cat lovers that cats do these kinds of things if they have bonded closely with their humans. The poor primates are so slow and defenseless, someone has to protect them after all. ;)

Agreed. And if you're not willing to learn how, and to spend the time doing it, you should not be allowed to have a dog. They've one very shirt evolutionary step away from being wolves, and if they are really trying to harm you, most people would be pretty defenseless against them. Train them, leash them, or don't have a dog. ("you" in this case is referring to poor dog owners, not to you, Fred :-D )

It should be applied to all pet owners. Even the ones want exotic pets. Unless you corner a cat, it will just run from you. Not so with the canines they must be trained. I don't know if cats can really be trained.

Maxwell usually has my 6 when I wash dishes. He gets no food, but he backs up 180 degrees from the sink, next to my calves and hangs out. I feel pretty safe from the kitchen table trying to start some chit. :-D

They can, to a point. You just need to give them a good reason to do what you ask them t do. Yes, ask, not order. Cats don't take orders. And "because I want you to and it will make me happy" is not a good reason to them, they're not genetically hardwired to want to please a pack leader the way dogs are.

That said, my cats are partially trained. They may not come when called, unless they are bored, but they know their names, and several words, including a few that makes them stop whatever they are doing, and not do it again. :)

And you're lucky you have a reliable dog. Those kitchen tables are unpredictable and can be very dangerous if you're not careful around them!

I wonder if there is a leash law in california, I know we have one here in missouri

I was driving years ago, dog ran in front of me and I slammed on the breaks, stopping my car on the dogs leash
the dog was fine, aside from wheel being on the leash, the owner came out to yell at me and when I reminded her of the leash law, she pointed out "HES ON A LEASH"

I moved my car a foot,.so she could get the leash and take her dog,,which was fine...I dunno about that leash, I crushed it:-D

Yes, but cats can be trained, I trained my cat to meow whenever he wants food or water, or a clean kitty litter box.

I keep his box in the garage, water in the bathroom, and if he ever needs either, he meows at me to follow him, then he leads me to the empty water dish or defunked litter box/

I don't feed him but once a day, then as much as he can eat for an hour.
-something about keeping IGF-1 down in small rodents, I'm not sure if the eat/fast does the same drop from fasting in humans,I thought not.

but what's best for cats that you find, my was a stray found at Mcdonalds parking lots, 3 states away 12 yrs ago, he was emaciated animal living off of mcdonald burgers... so whenever I give him a treat,a mcdonalds burger, he goes nuts and eats the whole patty.

*the joke is, I didnt train him, I'm basically his bitch and he knows it, the only thing I don't do is feed him more than once a day...
