How about this: That extra grand is for the quality of the hardware, not the logo.

  2. DOA

    DOA MG's Loki

Actually that may be true or false, depending on what you buy. Not a myth if you know your hardware.

How about Win95 was the first "Windows". I made a living for a while off Win 3.11 but often hear 95 was the first "Windows".

Um, yeah. rolleyes I'm pretty sure I mentioned the part about this not being a windows vs. mac thread. Start one if you think it'll stay civil. Anymore flat out argumentative posts about apple will be deleted.

That wasn't a versus. It was a joke on them all supposedly being the same components, regardless of manufacturer.

And I still remember working with Windows 3.0. It was a tremendous pain in the neck.

Another fun one: 52X CD Drives spin so fast your CD's will explode.

I had a 52x CDRW in my Dell desktop. I had all of the CDs to re-install everything that was installed on the computer when I bought it. While the OS CD didn't explode, it developed a ¾" long split from the spindle hole outward rendering the CD useless. Whenever the drive spun up to maximum, you could hear a rather loud noise that sounded like some electric razors. Obviously there was a considerable amount of vibration/wobble. My current computer has a 24x drive.

CDs can explode at 52x if there is a flaw in the material or they are cracked. They will likely explode at lower speeds too, however.

Hehehe yep I had a brand new Liteon 52X CD burner and using it on the first day I installed it, a disk exploded and destroyed the laser assembly and that's when I learnt a valuable lesson about warranty :( Replaced it with a 32X Plextor and never had another problem ;)

Here is a good myth that the older MG folks will remember......... LOL
CRT monitors (remember them) have an electron gun shooting electrons at the speed of light straight at your head so you need to buy a special anti-radiation shield for your screen to prevent any users from getting brain cancer from all the dangerous electromagnetic radiation roflmao
It is of course true about the electron gun but sadly the electrons don't come out the front of the screen as there is a conductive mesh screen on the inside of the glass that conducts the electrons away and thus completing the electrical circuit and also making it safe to use. This fact didn't stop the snake oil radiation shield sellers from plying their wares with sensatonal claims and making a killing off the illinformed rolleyes

    sadly? :p

Myth: The [insert scary name] virus will physically burn your HD/PSU etc. Because THAT would be highly profitable for a hacker.

"It doesn't matter what I click on, my anti-virus will protect me."

I don't know if that's a common one outside of my house, but my mother says it every week when I clean the 3-15 bits of crap off of her machine.

I had a 52x for years, and only had one disc die. Admittedly, the disc in question was nearly ten years old at the time and had been played almost continually.

You must have the same good luck as my brother. He had two Pioneer 52X drives in his PC and they worked fault free for years and unlike me he only ever uses the cheapest no name blank media rolleyes

They must work OK or they wouldn't sell them......... or would they ;)

They work fine. It's just that that particular CD had been played very, very hard.

Funny there are 5 or more posts from Mods of the forum 'mac' bashing, yet my post gets called on the carpet??

I have been around here since 2004 and this is the respect I get?

Here is a myth, people are grateful for the free help you provide them.

    Seriously? rolleyes

First off...I was making a general statement at the direction the thread was going....to everyone. Period.

Secondly, you didn't even pretend to do anything other than bash Macs in that post and you happen to post right before I said that since I hadn't looked in the thread for a while.

Third, why don't you read down a few posts when I had to reiterate to someone else?

Lastly, length of how long you've been here has zero to do with me saying or not saying something to you. And frankly, if you think I 'disrespected' you by saying "Keep on topic, please", I can't help you out there.

And yes, some people definitely are ungrateful for free help and time you have spent with them. I would have to agree with that point.

    Here is another myth:

Being here a long time will make you a celebrity.

I've been here longer than you and expect no special treatment.

Do you really feel such a sense of entitlement that you need to stand up to a moderator instead of being mature and PMing her?

    1) I used my length of time here to establish that fact I am not a 'troll' looking for a flame war, just establishing a history..not fame, does being a super mod bring fame?

As far as a PM, why was I not provided such a courtesy?
If the statement was a generalization why quote me? I don't feel I was in the wrong here... if so not the only one in the wrong.
Because when you quoted my post everyone though you were talking only to me? like I did?

Oh, don't get me wrong. I was talking about you and I was also talking about the rest of the comments in that vein so the thread didn't turn into some flamefest. And I was not going to pm you to remind everyone that this was not a 'let's bash Apple' thread. As stated, your post just happened to be the one ahead of mine and was actually worse than the others since at least they attempted to stay on the 'myth' topic.

lol...I can really see how you have such an objection to me quoting you and saying 'stay on topic, please' and how that would offend you deeply.

Quite simply...stay on topic next time. If you want to continue this discussion, pm me as Adryn mentioned.

First off I read this thread 3 times over and did not see any Apple bashing, actually the references to Apple where measured and in some respects accurate from my observations BUT no "APPLE IS THE DEVIL" posts.

I agree and this was not a MAC v PC thread but a general computing myths one so, are MACs better than PCs who cares as you pay your cash and more so in MAC than PC and take your chance.

Sadly Apples are harder to fix and are they better in usability, use both and I prefer Windows OS over OSX just for Office compatibility mainly.

Errm so I get special treatment as I'm member #8 after Tim and Jim and the test accounts? buggerly bollocks if NO!

Myths in say Apple vs Windows is it safer, well no as malware is creeping in to OSX and iOS as we would not have https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3291 is OSX was safe.

    Myth next:

Are various browsers safe, well no, if you use Fx, IE,Opera of Chrome, then you still are prone to malware due to your downloading habit. downloading illegal music/video is not browser specific as to saving you from malware.

Did you notice when Laura told you and everyone else to stop, I did too?

Its called professional respect, even if I may not agree with it.

Please drop it, or take it to pm. This is getting ridiculous. I am respectfully asking you to take it to private channels, but I won't mention it a third time and will delete further arguments.
