Were there blue screen errors? What Service Pack are you running for XP? Is XP fully patched (at least through April)? What programs are you running in the System Tray?

    Hi

If you boot into Safe Mode (F8 at boot and choose Safe Mode with Networking) does your PC run ok?

In Device Manager do you have any yellow ! marks by any device and if so what?

For a comprehensive list of startups please run the below as written and attach your notepad file and we can see if you have any issues in startups, the main ones are likely too many 3rd party security softwares or malware.

If you can please post what the blue screen message was and its code as it helps narrow the issue down

You have likely had a Minidump, check here C:\WINDOWS\Minidump & see if there are any .dmp files. You should also go to start + run & type cmd, in the command prompt that opens type eventvwr, once the Event Viewer opens click on System in the left side window then scroll through the events that display on the right & look for any error & warning messages. Do the same with Application on the left.

You should also run chkdsk /r at the command prompt, since you are using the drive/partition to be checked you will be asked if you want to run chkdsk on the next reboot, say yes & then reboot your PC.

If you run chldsk you can view the log file by going to start + run type cmd, then type eventvwr at the command prompt. Once event viewer opens click on Application in the left window & then double click on Winlogon that's appears in the right window. On the event properties window that opens you can view the chkdsk log.

Most window installs over time will have a couple dump files. Only when they are occurring often is there real concern.

The errors & warnings in Event Viewer are also very common. I currently have a DCOM event ID 10016 error under the System menu that appears once a day. I've looked it up & since it's not relevent to my install I simply ignore it. I also get the occasional Tcpip event ID 4226 warning, that's because I run Utorrent & it exceeds XP connect limit all the time.

I had a crypt32 error without an event ID in the Application menu appearing constantly a couple weeks back. That one I had to fix, I did it it's never occurred again.

You can just open the errors & warnings & view what they say. Then Google them for more info (example: event ID 10016) you should see one or two Microsoft links in the Google search results, open them & see what they tell you.

Back to your initial post, the "recovered from a serious error" message always occurs during the next reboot or startup after a minidump has taken place. The minidump could be the result of a bad shutdown, windows errors, disk errors, installed program errors, just about anything really.

My instructions were to help eliminate windows & disk errors by running chkdsk /r & looking through your Event viewer to see what errors are occuring there.

Below is what my chkdsk results looked like under Winlogon in the Application menu of Event Viewer a couple weeks back. Don't be concerned about numbers like my 920 unused index entries that were removed by chkdsk. They are simply references to files & folders that no longer exist on your C: drive but are still referenced in the MFT. As you can see I had a couple other minor errors that were corrected. My HD is also ok "0 KB in bad sectors" were reported.

    Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Volume label is DRV07_VOL1.

A disk check has been scheduled.
Windows will now check the disk.
Cleaning up minor inconsistencies on the drive.
Cleaning up 920 unused index entries from index $SII of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 920 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 920 unused security descriptors.
The upcase file content is incorrect.
Correcting errors in the uppercase file.
CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocated in the
    master file table (MFT) bitmap.
Windows has made corrections to the file system.

    41943039 KB total disk space.
    5757204 KB in 22026 files.
    7368 KB in 2513 indexes.
    0 KB in bad sectors.
267883 KB in use by the system.
65536 KB occupied by the log file.
    35910584 KB available on disk.

4096 bytes in each allocation unit.
10485759 total allocation units on disk.
8977646 allocation units available on disk.

Hopefully your chkdsk results were no more eventfull than mine. Then it's just a matter of looking up any of the errors you found in Event Viewer. If you have any errors you can't figure out just post them & we'll try to sort them out for you.
