PSU or Thermal issue?

I posted this thread and stopped getting replies after I uploaded the minidump file:. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=286237

After further research, I think the issue is either that I have to replace my PSU or it's a thermal issue because I have trouble when first turning the computer on in the morning. It keeps turning off, giving me a variety of bluescreens. After turning if on over and over for a couple of hours, it will finally stay on normally. Then the next day, same problem again in the morning, normal in the evening.

Last night I left it "sleeping" instead of shutting down. This morning it again turned off several times, but in less than an hour, it stayed on.

So, my question is, how do I know if the PSU has to be replaced or if it's a thermal problem where some connection, when cold, disconnects (as in loose soldering) then connects as the computer heats up?

If you'd like to look at the BSod info, please see the thread I have linked above.

    Thank you.

Have you loaded any of the common temp sensing programs, that would help to rule it in or out.

No I didn't know there were any. Do you have a recommendation? Thanks!

To me, it's not baffling. Chances are it's either a PSU issue (more likely), or a motherboard issue.

For example, I currently have an HP G62 series laptop which will not boot the OS when cold. Once it has warmed up a bit, it will boot. It has known issues with the solder on the motherboard developing micro fractures so it only boots when the solder expands.

Do you have a known good PSU to replace your current one so as to rule it out?

If you'd like to test the hard drive, I recommend HD Sentinel.

My computer was running ok this afternoon (after a few blue screens in the morning). I left it at 6 p.m. for an hour and came back to a blue screen! It took about a half hour of restarts until I got it to stay on.

Downloading the suggested programs now, but I hope I'll know how to interpret the readings.

    Just a few musings:

An issue I found with Speedfan is being able to interpret all of the readings. If you have difficulty with this try comparing the numbers with the results from other programs, eg HWMonitor, Sandra, Speccy, to get idea of what's what. I know Speccy auto-updates its readings every few seconds and you have to re-run Sandra to get fresh almost up to the minute data).
Reading the useful post by the mekanic I would suggest the important temperature is that of the motherboard - to be precise the temperature of the m/b near the affected solder joint and of the solder itself. The internal air temperature might be a useful parameter. It has been said that m/b temperatures are measured by a sensor associated with the Northbridge chip and I've no reason to dispute this but maybe this is not indicative of the temperature of solder joints.

What all that amounts to you may or may not find that you temperature monitoring activity tell you very little except that when the computer has been on for a while it warms up and runs better. In some places in the world the difference in the ambient temperature between summer and winter can be greater than 20C; if it is some thermal effect maybe this could show in that your PC might run better in summer on hot day than winter ?

Two of the minidumps were windows faults which means in could be anything even a hardware fault 'ntkrnlmp.exe' but one minidump pointed towards avast anti virus so try uninstalling avast first from control panel add remove programs.

Because of the random nature of the crashes I would suspect memory so download and run memtest 86 from the download section, the test should complete without errors.

Hmmm..yesterday when I selected "Diagnostics" F11 (?) I ran the basic test and the Memory test failed, while the other two passed.

Thanks for looking at the minidumps. These are some of the bluescreen errors I've gotten (can't remember them all, tho):
    IRQL_NOT_GREATER_OR_EQUAL
    MEMORY_MANAGEMENT
    SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION
    ATTEMPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY

Yes, I've been putting off running those programs because I probably won't understand them. I have a lot going on right now so it'll take me a few more days. I'm very grateful to everyone who's offering advice.

I know it can be intimidating at first but the program I linked to is for novices, you run the program and click test all available memory then wait till the test finishes, if the memory is faulty the test will stop. In your own time though ,good luck.:)

Bad RAM will write data erroneously, and it will corrupt the operating system. I have also seen occasions where people use modules (sticks) which are two different frequencies, and crashed their PCs.

Bad modules can in some cases also lead to false flag errors regarding the hard drive.

Is there a way to rule out the PSU?

Your most costless approach would be to test it ( switch it out ) with a known good PSU.

*LOL* But because I don't have one, it would be "costful".

Update: I've been using my computer despite the occasional blue screens, but the latest development happened 2 days ago. Suddenly I was unable to connect to the internet. After trying different solutions, I called the DSL provider and she spent quite a while trying to help me. Finally she said she sees on a forum that many people are having problems with HP and Realtek PCIeGBE Family Controller and basically my problem is not fixable because the Network Adapter on the motherboard is broken!

The message I get is that "Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration.

It was also suggested on my original thread that I buy an ethernet card.

    Any suggestions or comments? Thanks!
