    Hello everyone,

Here is my problem. I am working on a friends HP Pavilion 97-1219 WM. Both of the shift keys won't respond to certain letters or numbers.
Left shift key won't respond to zxcvm,./1234890
Right shift key won't respond to poiurewq 09874321
Here are some of the things I have done:
    • uninstall keyboard in device manager then restart
    • checked sticky keys
    • upgraded bios (just thought it might help)
    • went into keyboard settings and disable anything I could
There is 2 things I have been thinking might be wrong. First, there might be some software on there preventing the use of the shift keys with certain letters or numbers. Lastly, the keyboard is dying.

    Any suggestions anyone can offer?

    Hi

What Windows version and Service Pack is this PC using?

I think you have done all you can in removal of driver and re-install, possible other avenue is malware scanning if that's causing the keyboard issues.

Windows 7 64bit. Actually I did not check service pack. I will do that when I go there later.

Attach an external keyboard so you can decide if the problem is hardware or software related.
If the external operates correctly, it is probably a hardware problem.
If the external operates the same as the laptop keyboard, it is probably software related.

If this just happened recently, and is software related, start looking at recent software installs and use add/remove to get rid of some programs. Do one at a time, reboot then test the keyboard.

I found among some parts I have a HP dv6000 laptop keyboard. If the keyboard on the other laptop is done for, could this one work? I am just asking being that they are both HP.
