Laptop switching between batt/AC modes

OK, perhaps some people had this problem with an Asus K43U or similar. After a coworker unplugged it at the DC connector (which the manual warns against), the laptop started switching between battery and AC modes in Windows 7 by itself. It switches a few times after I turn it on before settling on whatever it really should be on (usually AC mode).

I solved the issue by following one piece of advice I saw online. Unplug, take out the battery, and press the power switch for 20 seconds. That drained the power and well enough, it stopped auto-switching.

Though it's solved, my thought is this... is this an indication that my laptop needs maintenance? Thanks.

 

If you've fixed the problem, I would not worry about it unless the issue repeats itself.

If it does, try wiggling the cord about an inch from the DC plug. If the PC starts switching between AC and DC, you have a short and the power adapter will need to be replaced.

There are applications like this which you need to install that will provide diagnostics for your laptop and are provided by the laptop's manufacturer . Perhaps, you may try to contact Asus or visit their support page.

 

I see, guys, thanks for the tips. I think in conclusion (for now), some parts would need replacement, since it's been more than two years since I bought this rig. Probably the battery or AC adapter or both. And yes, the problem with the AC/batt mode switching had been repeating. Then I saw that the battery indicator light is blinking red instead of green (probably meaning a problem with the battery), so I guess that's that.
