Where have all the editors gone?

I was reading the news and came across these two, rather hilarious, typos.

Despite the seriousness of the articles, I couldn't help laughing. This was on two different articles on different news websites. Do newspapers still employ editors? or do they solely rely on spell check these days? :-D

Its the competitiveness of getting it out there as fast as you can now. Editing has gone by the wayside...as has fact checking if you ask me. The media is abhorrent to me now. Thye lack integrity and are only out for shock value.

    **end soap box**

Its seems to be going that way with everything. I've been unfortunate enough to pick up self published books on Amazon as well. They are awful as far as editing (and just plain awful).

Yea, that's probably it. I just think it looks really unprofessional.

It does lead to hilarious typos thought. I mean, it must have been really rough to be shot 5 times a week :-D

I was a journalist in the USAF many moons ago and I started seeing this trend even then. A training excercise at the Defense Information School (DINFOS) involved us bringing in hometown newspapers that we would critique in class. Some of the errors just dumbfounded me, and it has only gotten worse since then.

Not only in the news arena . . . I saw this on a TV series (Crisis, I think) and snapped a pic of it - I'm just amazed that it made it into final production, and I'm not surprised the series was cancelled. It was a televised news broadcast in the show . . . great writing, this rolleyes

There are actually two things wrong with this . . . and I noticed the grammatical error second :-D

Yes, Ma'am . . . I've attempted to read a few self published works also. Maybe I got a few of the worst, but wow!

Not all of them. However, I agree that the quality-to-noise ratio is, for lack of a better word, abysmally discouraging.

I laughed out loud at one of those TV commercials promoting law suits against prescription drug companies. It said to call this number if you experienced death.rolleyes

On a sign we were supposed to print:

I asked the boss if he thought maybe they meant 'extensive wine selection'. :-D

Eh, at least the design team is using spell check. My favorite sign was:

Now that is a specialty, especially since we are not near the coast. :-D

Fred, I bet it was an expensive wine selection! LOL

I know how some of them happen, because I've published the occasional special turn of phrase even after I proofread and my editor goes through it. One of us usually catches it within a few minutes of posting and fixes it, though, which is the bonus to writing for a website as opposed to something in print. But some things people write just astound me. It's like they have only a passing acquaintance with the English language.

Oh, I have had them argue with me. Now, I tell my boss if I see one, if they say it is OK, I print it and LMFAO.

My boss listens to me, and appreciates constructive criticism. Design thinks I am trying to insult them somehow. I don't get it.

My favorite was some car magnets they printed. www.website.co. That pesky m will get you every time.

Very specialized field I think. :-D

I told them maybe light housecleaning, but they said no. So, I printed them. See one every once in a while, makes me laugh.

I have a friend who is a musician. He was selling a bass guitar and a reverb pedal. He called the local free ad paper to advertise them. They ended up in the ad as a "bass guitar and reefer". When he returned from work after the new issue came out, his answering machine was filled with calls concerning the "reefer".

If you have ever had a loved one that suffered from and died from alzheimer's disease,
then you would know that making fun of a ninety-one year old man for making such a mistake is not funny, it's painful.
If or when it happens to you, and you have to watch, then you'll know.

mjnc I am sorry for your pain and loss and I understand it as I have experienced it in my immediate family. Everyone deals with painful things differently. The only thing that kept the rest of my family sane going through this was to see humor in the little things because the devastation of the illness was just too painful. Humor is a stress reliever also.
Now that the loved one is gone I still choose to see the humor of the little things and remember the good times. I try not to dwell too long on the painful memories caused by the illness. Just as I do with those that have suffered with other illnesses like cancer. I sincerely think they would want to be remembered by better times. Of course that may not be other peoples way of dealing but it is my way.

I don't think anyone meant to offend you or anyone else here with humor. But I do understand where you are coming from. You know that old saying "Time is a great healer". It does help. Of course there will always be some painful memories too. Again sorry for your loss.

My grandmother had alzheimer's, she was 91 when she died.

Like katkat, we chose to see the humor in the little things. For example, my sister was asking her if she knew who the people in the room were, some she remembered and some she didn't, when she got to my mother she said no but then quickly added, but your not the president! we all laughed including my grandmother.

People grieve and deal with things in different ways. What might seem callous to some, is the only way some will make it through. I'm sure phantom didn't mean any disrespect by it.

Yeah, actually lost one of my best pals to Alzheimer's Disease and a few other things, last August. His name was Alf, too. So, yeah, your not alone.
Not aware that the pic. even says anything about him having Alzheimer's, it's way to blurry. He could just have bad eyesight for all I know, esp. at 91.rolleyes

When I was working at a screen printing shop there was an order for signs that had 8 languages on it. The English version had misspelled words on it (only one or two if I remember correctly and there was a LOT of information to it). We didn't have any way of proofing the rest of the languages. Told the boss who told the customer who told..... they got back to us to just print it, it would be too costly to fix. The press operator was the one who caught it. It had to get past the salesman, the art designer, the screen tech (me), and onto the press before anyone saw it. Apparently nobody used spell check.

My dad has alzheimer's, and it's perfectly awful. However, I still found that funny, and I find any number of things he does funny. When he knows who he is, he finds them funny when we tell him what he said or did. As has been said, everyone has to make it through however they can, but I honestly would have shot myself between the eyes a couple of years ago rather than deal with it if I couldn't find the funny.

Oh, B.T.W., I used to be a Psycho-Geriatric Nurse, and am a Carer for a family member with an undisclosed problem, before I get branded as an unfeeling Dick. Thanks for wishing Alzheimer's on me. How compassionate of you.rolleyes
This thread has been derailed enough. Basically, yeah, What the above three Posters said. You need 'Black' or Sardonic humour to get through life's tragedies. Something I know first-hand. I'm done with this .

    Sorry for your loss, mjnc.

Life is a struggle that none of us are going to get out of alive, and we all have lost friends and loved ones to the inevitable. Seeing humor in adversity does not negate a person's compassion - it enhances it in my opinion. It's a way to deal with loss and sorrow, keeping our senses and emotions afloat and sailing forward. You cannot be truly compassionate when smothered in sorrow . . . You cannot be an effective friend for the living, or the dying.

If a person can't laugh at life in all it's aspects their soul has lost its armor, and it becomes very easy to see hurt where no hurt exists or was intended. That's how I see it anyway. :)

Exactly and the typos and poor reporting will continue as we have 24/7 news and the onus is to get the "scoop" the quickest, hence the typos and bad reporting.

The internet is not the best media for quick accurate news.
