Alas, poor drivers.

Hello, my newly-found friends. Was wondering if someone can help me with my driver issue. Have an HP, Compaq notebook thingy(Very helpful, I know), it says Presario f700, with nothing after that on the bottom.

I am currently trying to install some DJ software, my tray does not open or close, nor does it read media.

I opened windows device manager and there is nothing up with the DVD tray or whatever it's self, but there ARE two unidentified, problematic devices(?)

I have gotten far enough to open property details and am able to obtain some driver information, but am pretty lost on what I need to do, as well as I am sure I need the rest of the product name, as I have seen other posts regarding Presario f700s.

Hi subatomicpanda. Welcome to Major Geeks. :)

You can try checking here for the drivers you need. I'm concerned that your optical drive won't open or read media so you can use it to burn CDs/DVDs or install software you may need or want. That HP/Compaq support page may lead you to a page showing how your computer was configured. You may need to replace the drive or get one that connects via USB.

If the HP link from the earlier reply does not solve your unidentified drivers, tell us the Hardware IDs of these devices (Device Manager, right-click, Properties, Details).

Or you can use DriverMax (http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/drivermax.html) to find drivers for unidentified devices.

P.S. regarding DriverMax, use the free version that allows two driver downloads per day.

    Hi

Is your Windows version the original Windows Vista (32bit or 64bit?) or have you upgraded to a newer version and if so what?

From the page that mdonah posted to drivers, re-install your chipset driver and reboot and try again with the CD drive tray. Possible is that its broken.

Hello, my friends and thank you for your time.

You're absolutely right my friend I went from Vista to 7. It is 32-bit, I think. Can you guys tell me what to type in command prompt to check?

Why would I need chipset? Downloading anyway.

Also I reformatted my D drive a while ago on accident. Not sure if that matters.

    UPDATE:

I re installed chipset. Seems like computer is a little quicker. Cheers.

I re installed missing drivers, but they could not be found by windows in the preconfigured pack.

Right click on Computer in the Start menu and select properties. The first screen that comes up will tell you which version of Windows you're running and whether it's 32-bit or 64-bit.

The chipset driver makes sure the CPU and associated circuitry are runing "up to snuff".

Formatting the "D" drive has no bearing on the matter as your drivers are installed on the "C" drive where your OS resides.

Did these "re-installs" come about as a result of using the IObit Driver Booster app that MA suggested in message #8 of this thread (thereby making them upgrades rather than re-installs)? Or did you simply attempt to reinstall drivers that were previously installed on your system? That's an important distinction.

You don't just want to fill the hardware driver hole with just any driver, you want to fill it with the most up-to-date driver for that particular proprietary hardware. That's where an app like Driver Booster can help immensely.

I used Driver Booster, it says everything is up to date. :/

The Vista drivers may work under Win 7 without having to run them in compatibility mode. The XP drivers for my Texas Instruments card reader work fine under Vista as does my Sigmatel C Major audio drivers.

That was for an HP Pavillion but will try anyway.

Am I supposed to make folders for these?

HP and Compaq are both put out by HP BUT, the HP drivers MAY NOT work on your Compaq. There are, of course differences in the machines. Did you try the link I gave you in post #2? It's for your Compaq. If you put in your Serial number or let the site check your machine, you should be presented with a list of drivers for your particular computer including those Ricoh card reader drivers all of which may work under Win 7.

You could store the drivers in a folder you create so you have them should you need them again. On my computer, when I double click the installer, the files are unzipped to a location on my "C" drive and autostart the installation process. Some require a restart of the computer to become operable.
