    Hi,

I have downloaded the Kubuntu iso and the md5 checksums verified.

I bought a new DVD-R (16X), my dive is 16x and attempted to use Braserro at 16x to burn the iso.

I configured Brassero to similate and to remain open for further files.

On burning, the similation was successful, but after the burn, and on exit, I received a message that the burn had failed.

I re-attempted the whole process, but received the same message.

Now when I insert the DVD it is not recognisd by Brassero, and does is not recognised through the Home folder either (no drive).

I have no idea what could have gone wrong.

I have read the log, but am none the wiser. I attach the logfile

    Thanks

    A

Ps I am using a Linux live pendrive (not persistent)

    UPDATE:

I though that I had failed to create the live DVD.

I put the DVD into the drive and booted and to my suprise KUBUNTU started,

As stated, I effectively made the live DVD twice (probably unnecessary). My question is do I have repeated files on the DVD, or did they simply overwite (looks like the latter)- I have not yet found how to examine the DVD.

I am using Dolphin. If I am reading the folders correctly. It looks like I am using 660.8 MiB, but the original iso was greater than 700! I think that 660.8MiB is the DVD.

I can't see how to introduce a folder for my files (storage).

What does the Root folder indicate?

OS looks like my hard drive (odd terminology)

    Is there a Disk Manager?

I wa surpised to see that KUBUNTU (ver 12) appears to use less RAM - compared with Unity (ver 12). I am wondering if I could even run ver 14 of KUBUNTU (with 1 GB of RAM)?

    The DVD is open

I now these observations are a little chaotic - I am learning 'on the go'

    Best wishes

PS. I am not sure what the advantages of the various interface are - KUBUNTU looks more configurable, requires less RAM and is more like Windows - Is this the point, or am I missing it?

First order of business would be to replace the browser with Firefox.

I use imgBurn and have never had a problem burning an image.
    Are you burning from windows?

When you install Kubuntu, you will have a folder in the Home folder for your files and such.
The root folder is where the OS system files themselves are located.
You can install a disk manager from the software repository. Try Gparted first.

I burned from a UBUNTU live pendrive

I did leave the DVD open and wonder if the accounts for the problem.

When I burned twice to the DVD-R, did the second burn simply overwite the original files?

If you're using a DVD+R disk, then yes. If you're using a DVD-R without finalizing the burn, then you could only have duplicated the files. But that shouldn't matter. With a total of 4.7 GBs at your disposal on the DVD, I'm not sure why you're having trouble adding a disk manager to the compilation. Have you tried using a different burning app?

    Thanks for replying.

I can't see any duplicated files, are you saying they would have overwritten the original files?

I left the DVD-R open quite deliberately so that I could use the space. The option was available and seemed sensible - why waste the space.

What you want to do requires a burning app (like Nero Burning ROM) that is capable of creating multisession disks . I don't know anything about Brassero. Do you know if it's capable of multisession burning? If yes, did you configure the app to do multisession burning when you first wrote to the disk?

Even a disc without multisession formatting can be continued as long as it is not finalized. However, in that case prior sessions are not imported and cross referenced between sessions. This means that only the last session will be visible and you will only be able to access data from the last session.

If you're not doing multisessions and you want to add a disk manager (or anything else) to your Kubuntu burn, then you have to burn it at the same time that you burn Kubuntu. That means that you have to add the disk manager to the ISO file prior to burning. In other words, you can always add data to a non-finalized disk but you can't add the data to the data that's already there because the prior data simply gets ignored (again, unless you are using multisessions). Even though the disk may not be finalized, each sequential burning session is "finalized".

I'm not sure that I'm being clear. It's not that complicated but I'm having problems articulating it.

    Hiya.

The problem here IS Brasero itself, I'm afraid. It's well-known for destroying not only files, but generally messing up the DVD's themselves about 50% of the time.

A far better alternative in Linux is xfburn. Far more reliable.

One last point; when burning Linux distros to disc, do burn them at the SLOWEST speed possible (for xfburn it goes down to just 4x...)

You should find that if you do this, you will NOT get any failures.....unless you're using VERY cheap discs..!

    Regards,

    Mike.
