I am running Windows Vista Home Premium on a laptop.
it has an AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60 2.0 GHz processor; 32 bit operating system and 3gb of RAM.

I had some issues back in June with a couple of the MS updates so I did a system restore to before those updates (changed my whole desktop and I lost the switch between windows icon located at the bottom on the screen.) Things have been working fine since then except for the fact that I would sometimes get a popup message about the indexing service has stopped working when running CCleaner. (MS Windows Search Indexer has stopped working) But then I would click the recommend check for fixes (or whatever that screen said) and then all was fine for again (at least for awhile). After a lot of attempts to get that issue resolved since it would pop up every once in a while I eventually went to the C Drive and removed the check mark from the option to Index the drive for faster searching and all has been fine.

    Except....

The day before last I was doing some work on my computer and it suddenly shut down on me and when I restarted it I got the message
Stop: C0000135 Unable to locate component. This applications has failed to strt because USP10.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem. So I installed the disk that came with the computer & did the start up recovery and the computer was working fine until last night.

Last night I went to create an acronis backup of the computer and after a little while I got a message while it was creating partition image part 1 of 3 that said
E000101F4: Failed to read data from the disk. Failed to read from the sector 102,441,543 of hard disk 1.

So I went to the acronis site and found something about running the chkdsk on the hard drive. I then went to drive c and selected properties > tools > error checking and selected both boxes and restarted the computer. However, the computer did restart but there was absolutely nothing on my monitor for some time and I eventually just went to bed and left it running (since I wasn't actually sure if it was or was not running).
Later on I checked on it (maybe 2 hours) and the screen was at the normal screen for me to log in.

This morning I was trying to find out if in fact the chkdsk program even ran and what the results were but after finding information on how to view the results in a text file that would be downloaded to my desktop I did as it instructed by Pressing the windows + r key and typed powershell.exe in the box and at the prompt
    get-winevent -FilterHashTable @{logname="Application"; id="1001"}| ?{$_.providername –match "wininit"} | fl timecreated, message

I got a message to the effect that it could not find the path specified and there was an empty txt file on my desktop.

I have also made sure that in the registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetControlSession Manager the boot executable is set to autocheck autochk * and I went to msconfig and went to the boot options and the No GUI Boot is checked.

I did find something about finding out "What is the output of the following command when run at a command prompt:
    fsutil dirty query C:"

And mine states that C: is NOT DIRTY

I did not want to go any further and take the chance of messing something up worse that it may already be.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to whether or not the chkdsk did actually run and repair anything and How to find out or why it is not running on startup and where I should go from here?

    Thanks So Very Much

I have re-run every possible malware and spyware scan as well as some online scans and nothing is being found.

I then remember about the SeaTools program and started running those. It passed the SMART Test but failed the Sort Drive Self Test :( :cry

I am guessing that the issue might actually be that my hard drive is failing. The darn thing was purchased 6/11/11 and is in limited warranty till 5/22/16 but is there some way to be sure before I contact WD about this hard drive?

I also ran the WD Data Lifeguard test since it is a WD hard drive and that one is saying that it past the Smart Test as well. So I am going to run the Quick and Extended tests with their software as well just to be sure (am I on the right track here?)

I am guessing that I was on the right track and it is a hard drive problem. I ran the test using the WD DataLifeGuard Diagnostics as well and it failed that quick test as well. Have gone to WD Support and contacted them since the Hard Drive was purchased in June 2011 and is still under warranty until 5/2016.

So I guess that I had better just be very careful with what I am doing until I have heard back from them and then see what they have to say. I do have a good Acronis True Image Backup from back in May 2014 that I can use to reinstall everything to a new hard drive and the only new things that have been done since that backup are all minor items related to updates and the my docs file which is easy enough to backup onto an external hard drive as well.

I did do a backup using the WD software that came with the one external hard drive yesterday - but I really have never used that to recover anything and I know that Acronis is supposed to be able to return my pc to just where is was at the time of that other backup (that I am sure is good) if I need to replace the hard drive. Just need to figure out how to do that as well.

Will let you know if I learn anything else and sorry to have bothered you with my problem (which I apparently able to diagnose myself :) )

I have just been looking into the hard drives for this laptop and I have a question. This laptop originally came with It has a WD 250 GB 5400 RPM SATA hard drive Model Number: WDC WD2500BEVS-22UST0 which resulted in information on the WD Blue Scorpio Hard Drives (http://support.wdc.com/product/downl...vel1=7&lang=en)

I replaced it when that original went bad after 2.5 years (original post --- http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=238808) and it was suggested that I might want to get the WD Scorpio Black 250GB hard drive instead of the blue since the blue had 5400 rpm and the current WD2500BEKT is also 250GB but with 7200 rpm for the performance boost. I don't need a large hard drive (this one is still only about 35% full). "I agree with you that another 250GB drive would meet your needs, based on what you've said about your old hard drive. Of course, many other sizes are available and may not vary much in price from a 250GB. You could choose one of many of the SATA 3.0Gb/s drives listed at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...TA 3.0Gb/s. Since hard drive replacement is a definite need, not a choice due to your circumstances, you might consider this an opportunity to upgrade to a 7200rpm drive for a performance boost."

Anyway, I started looking into this and I am guessing that I am going to have to send in the bad hard drive first and then they will send out a replacement or repair and return this one to me. However, I know that it will take some time and I am not really sure just how long I would be without the computer while waiting for this one to get to them and the for them to send out a replacement or repair and return the hard drive to me.

So --- in my searching I did find a couple but it would appear that for me to go out and purchase another one would cost me about $125 at new egg. But I am not opposed to going back to the blue either (vs. the black model with the higher rpm). I just really would like to have another hard drive to put into the computer in the meantime since I do run a business with the computer and being without it for over a week is going to be a problem. The old pc that I have is running windows xp and runs really really slow - but if I have to I can use it. I actually do still have the original hard drive that was going bad (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=238808) but I really don't imagine that putting that one back in and running the computer until they get the replacement sent is a smart idea either.

Any suggestions on where to look for a decent replacement hard drive ???

chkdsk does not run on startup - HARD DRIVE DYING :(

Been doing some research and I know that WD is going to want this hard drive returned to them before they send me a replacement and my biggest issue with that is the fact that I have some personal/private information on it that I am not thrilled about simply removing from the computer to ship it off to them.

Yes, the drive is under warranty and sending them this dying hard drive in order to have them either repair or replace it would be great - but I am real hesitant about doing so with all our personal information as well as my parents personal and medical information on the drive.

So I have been researching purchasing a new or refurbished hard drive for this laptop and I did find one that is a refurbished model of the one that was originally in this laptop. I found it at http://www.serversupply.com/products/part_search/pid_find.asp?pid=114948& for $45 including shipping.

I did find a brand new one like the one that is in this laptop now at newegg for $126 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136279

I then started doing some more searching and started to find other drives that state SATA II and SATA III. Such as http://www.outletpc.com/zp5466-western-digital-scorpio-blue-500gb-laptop-hdd.html which is a 500GB SATA II

then there is a SATA III that is actually 1TB but looks similar to the original hard drive (just much larger for only $70) WD Blue 1 TB Mobile Hard Drive, Solid Performance for Everyday Computing - 2.5" - Sata 6 Gb/s, 5400RPM, 8MB Cache, 9.5mm form factor, 2yr Warranty - WD10JPVX http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8158169&csid=

Now I am not sure what to do. If I should just go with the refurb model for $45 or spend a bit more and just what is meant by the SATA vs. SATA II vs. SATA III

Your original post was about chkdsk not running on startup under Win Vista.

Yesterday, my laptop slipped out of my hand and slammed down on the table I use to work with the computer.

I was concerned that I may have damaged the hard drive by causing a head crash. I opened an elevated (Run as Administrator) Command Prompt and typed in chkdsk /f /r /x /b and hit enter. It asked if I wanted to run chkdsk on the next reboot and I typed y, hit enter, closed command prompt and restarted the computer. The 5-stage chkdsk came up on screen (I think it"s better than the one in XP), progressed through completion (it took a little over an hour for a 120GB drive) and restarted the computer at which point it said the drive was clean and proceeded to boot into Vista normally.

I have no idea if a log file was created or where it may be kept.

You are absolutely correct that the post simply started out as being a possible issue with chkdsk not running on startup and I did the exact same thing that you did as far as running the command prompt in an elevated state and typed in the same commands as you. However, when my computer restarted nothing ever came up on my monitor at all (so I tried again with the same results) and then tried running it by going into the c drive and selecting properties > tools > error checking and selected both boxes and restarted the computer.

Each time with the same results - nothing happened. I just realized that in my original post I did not state that it tried running it from the elevated command prompt steps first (my mistake).

Since it was not running (or at least nothing was appearing on the monitor to let me know that it was running (as you saw on your monitor) no matter which way I attempted to run the chkdsk is why I started that post. In the meantime I recalled the two programs to test the hard drive as well - Seagate SeaTools and the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic and both of those came up stating that the drive failed.

When I got nothing at all on my monitor to let me know it was running was why I went in search of some sort of report and found that there was no report for the results leading me to further believe that it did not actually run.

Re: chkdsk does not run on startup - HARD DRIVE DYING :(

Is the disk readable at all? You could pull it, connect it to another computer either internally or externally with an adaptor or enclosure and pull your personal data off of it and on to the drive of the other computer then delete the data from the failing drive using something like Files Terminator Free.

I am still working on the laptop with the sick hard drive (as long as I don't go to any graphics heavy websites or games I am fine for now).

I did find a similar hard drive to replace this one and just ordered it. It will be here tomorrow. (Yippee!)

Oddly enough I was just telling my hubby that I might get an external case for the ill hard drive and put it in there and try to wipe it clean before sending it off to WD.

I do use Acronis True Image and have a good backup of the pc from before the issues did start to arise and another one from 6 weeks ago as well. So I can restore the pc to this current state (less the hard drive failing issue) once I put the new hard drive in and follow the steps for using the acronis true image backup - and I did just that back in 2011 as well.

Thanks for the suggestion and link for the software for cleaning the sick hard drive before sending it in to WD since it is under warranty. Then at least I don't have to worry about sending a readable hard drive with lots of personal info out in the mail. Thanks for that suggestion :)

You're welcome for the suggestion :) but, apparently I misunderstood. I thought you just wanted your data off of the drive and you were going to leave the OS installed. :-o

You can completely wipe the drive securely by using MiniTool Partition Wizard Bootable CD (the download link is at the bottom of the page). Download the ISO, burn it to CD then boot from it. Once booted, you can select how you want the drive wiped and how many passes you want. Any data will be unrecoverable then.

As for wiping the drive - I honestly don't care one way or the other if the operating system is left on there. I just want all of my personal information off of the drive before returning it to WD since it is under warranty.

It was a blank drive when I purchased it and put it into the laptop anyway so one way or the other - it really doesn't matter (as long as all of our information is completely erased and un-recoverable)

Thanks for the link on reviewing the information from the results of the chkdsk scans. I had found the same steps at a different link but there are no results to be found :( That is why I came to the conclusion that it was not running the CHKDSK on startup. I did do a sfc /scannow and it found errors and could not fix them. I was able to locate that log and when running the sfc /scannow it did show that it was in fact running (unlike the chkdsk command)
