Hi, I have recently been clearing out the loft in my house. I came across some old computer parts.

I have no idea what computer they are from, or how old they are.
I think they was from my grandads house when he died.

Does anyone know what computer they are from? :confused

    Any history on the parts?

Are they junk? or worth anything?

Now, that's some old stuff. The RAM is EDO 72 pin SIMM memory, that came in 8, 16, 32, and 64MB sizes . . . maybe 128MB also, but I'm not positive about that. My first computer came with 32Mb of this RAM, which I upgraded to the board's MAX of 64Mb. I was king of the world then :-D this RAM was in use in the early 1980s to the late 1990s.

(If you were wondering, EDO stands for Extended data-out, and SIMM stands for Single In-line Memory Module).

Hard drive looks to be less than one GB in size, probably just +/- 400 megabytes. The thing that looks like a reel to reel tape recorder is probably just that. A tape drive used to back up a computer, maybe? Never had one, so I'm not sure. All expensive stuff in their day . . . but now? Not really worth much, except to a collector of such items, I guess. I could be wrong . . .

Now, get off my lawn! :p

Forgot about the add on card!

It's a Diamond Mulitmedia sound card, that uses an ISA slot. ISA stands for Industry Standard Architecture. It's a 16 bit bus created by IBM and used on 80286 based motherboards, that was backward compatable with the older 8 bit bus used on the 8088 based boards. ISA was replaced by the PCI slot in the early 1990's.

Last motherboard I saw with an ISA slot was a PII based board . . . It had one ISA slot. I probably have that exact sound card laying around in my parts graveyard, lol

Makes me want to grub around in my old parts and toss together a PII PC and put windows 95 on it. Well, maybe not :-D

Gee , the motherboard looks like the one I am currently using. I love my old computer, have never hooked up the "new" one. lol

    I stand corrected . . . it's a PIII based board. I went and dug it out and looked . . . :-D

    I suppose if you've got a few years...LOL

Did Micro$oft actually put out floppies?

Sure. mdonah, you must be young. The operating system came on floppies. Later, before computers could boot from CDs, you'd get a boot floppy and use that to point to the CD to install the OS.

My Windows for Workgroups 3.11 came on floppies. I'm trying to remember how many. I don't think I saved them.

I'm 61. I meant floppies for Windows 8. I used to work with 5¼" floppies on Omnicron Micro Achievers, Apple 2Es and Cs. The Mac SEs and Classics had dual 3½" floppies.

I'm not that old, but 20 years close, remembering having to re-install NT4 which was I think 6 disks for the setup.

Also, remember having to re-install SP6a a few time in the past. Oh the old days.

95a came on floppies as well.

    Yep. I think I still have a set of those somewhere . . .

I really need to weed out my old software and hardware graveyard/s . . . :-D
