    Greetings Geeks -

I visit Winrar.com and download Winrar. Avira immediately detects the file as adware. I had Panda running for previous installs of Win 8, and it did not detect it. I am convinced that I twice installed the Astromedia hijacker as a result.

Another poster suggested my IP may have been hijacked, but I am pretty sure that is not the case. I am thinking of downloading the file from to a laptop, and trying to run it from there.

So, any idea what is going on? Is it a false positive? Is there a safe alternative for .rar files?

    Thanks for any help.

This is more of a topic for the Software Forum not the Malware Forum. But in short yes WinRar is adware supported like thousands of other programs. WinRar site clearly states the below
If you want a good free program to handle all kinds of compression formats then try 7zip. See the below link:

I was unsure about which forum to post in, I felt that somebody would have recommended the Malware Forum had I posted in the Software Forum! Anyway . . .

I figured that Winzip would prompt me for installs of extra software, regardless of reviewing the fine print. Specifically, I was in search of feedback regarding the Astromedia search modification that was installed. I am almost sure I got that from Winzip, and I know I did not purposefully select that.

Moot now, I will use your suggestion. I sincerely appreciate the help you provided and the time you took to do so!

I assume you mean WinRar not WinZip which are not written by the same company. But normally it is up to you to uncheck the 3rd party addons to avoid having them installed. If you don't read each page that comes up during an installation you could miss unchecking something. The default is to install.

    You're welcome.

Are you still having problems due to any junkware that you may have installed inadvertently? If yes, then you should run the READ & RUN ME FIRST cleaning process. See the sticky//pinned threads.
