    Greetings!
Using my Netbook (Eee;WinXP SP3) today (which has no built in ROM drive), I plugged in my LITEON DVD/CD ROM drive via USB (which has worked before under the same circumstances), I received this notice:

"Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this device, but cannot find the hardware device. {Code 41}"

    Device Type.......DVD/CD-ROM drives
    Manufacturer......{Standard CD-ROM drives}
    Location............Location 0
ATAPI DVD A DH20A4P USB Device

Has anyone seen this error before? Thanks!

Try unplugging the drive, uninstalling the device driver in device manager, restarting the computer and re-plugging the cd drive to let Windows re-install the driver. If this fails to correct the issue, replace the USB cable. Cables are the weakest and least expensive link.

I did this, but not in the order you list. I'll try it again using your order.

I followed your directions and received the following:

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

(Troubleshooter cannot fix this, I've tried)

And, I've used two different cables with the same result. While I am familiar with the registry, IF I could find the configuration info, I wouldn't know how to fix it, nor do I know where to find the info for Code 19.

    Thoughts?

It may not be possible, but since the drive can be seen but not functional you could try updating th drive's firmware. Ordinarily I wouldn't perform this action unless the drive is blu-ray as they tend to need regular updates. However, if the MS fix doesn't work you have a non-functioning drive and if the update fails, technically you've lost nothing.

The one thing I would do is connect it to a later build of Windows (I.e. vista, 7) to rule out the drive is the issue, not the operating system (XP) before I attempted the firmware update.

Excellent idea! My wife has a laptop that is running Win7....now if I can just get it away from her............

I'll check into the first one as well, since I have had this drive for a little while. Back in the morning with results...

I did not intentionally skip your reply...I was headed to bed and took one last look at my responses, and noticed I failed to click on an active link....which of course went to the page you wanted me to go to. I read through the page quickly, and will try your suggestion first thing in the morning. #5 looks promising as well. Thanks.

    Greetings All!
Today is a great day indeed. Time for 'thanks' (sorry if I miss someone).

Yesterday was a long day. I had to do many repairs on my wife's computer so I could use it for testing, and I finally got it up to speed.

Thanks! to the Mekanic. After getting my wife's laptop working, the problem of a hardware and cable failure was ruled out. Her machine recognized the generic USB DVD/CD ROM drive, connected by the same USB cable, recognized the media on the disk in the drive, and seamlessly imported the media to iTunes, and played it (music).

Thanks! to Mdonah who supplied a hardware procedure which, while not solving the problem, reminded me that step-by-step procedures are very important when dealing with hardware/software problems, something I had forgotten.

Thanks! finally to plodr, who, using one of my hardware/software failure descriptions, ran down a link for me that, after ruling out a drive/cable failure, provided the exact information I needed to fix a Registry entry corruption on my laptop.

After following the Registry entry correction directions (Step-by-step Procedure!), the USB cable was attached, the drive turned on, and RATS!, another box appeared informing me that iTunes software was missing! As I sat there my eyes glazed over, my brain went into shutdown mode, my fingers went numb, and I felt the will to live beginning to drain away.....and suddenly, iTunes opened! The drive was detected, the media in the drive (S&G Wednesday Morning, 3 am) imported (and played), and Device Manager was clear of any yellow triangles! I felt my heart rate return to normal, I shut everything down and went to bed.

In the long run, the time was well invested and the experience and interplay with all of you (and your suggestions!) actually made this whole thing kind of fun! I can hardly wait for something else to break so I can come back to the forum! (actually, I do have some other problems, but that's for another day)

I'm not exactly sure how to use the forum tools to properly thank everyone and mark this problem solved, but I'll work on that this afternoon. Thanks! again everyone!
