Apparently, you need to use a third party app to burn the ISO properly instead of using Windows 8 itself to do so. Recommendations are Ashampoo Burning Studio Free and CDBurnerXP.

    Thanks for clearing that up.

584 MB is about the right size. I don't know why it's not booting on your XP machine unless Windows 8 itself isn't copying the required boot information. I use Ashampoo and NOT the burning capabilities built into Windows Vista.

I'm mdonah not AtlBo although, AtlBo is a close associate of mine in these forums.

You'd install CDBurnerXP (see attachments 1 — 3). Note that CDBurnerXP is Bundleware and you need to opt out of Clean water if you don't want to install it on your computer.

Then you'd run it (see attachments 4 & 5). I have had problems with verification of the burn in CDBurnerXP if I use Memorex media or DVD-RW media. CDBurnerXP will report an error and freeze up. At that point I have no choice but to go into Task Manager and kill the process. Of course I've then made a coaster.

Notice in screen 2 I highlighted "Associate CDBurnerXP with ISO files". Make sure you tick it to make CDBurnerXP and not Windows 8 associate with ISOs. Also notice in screen 1 I've unticked "Languages". In screen 5, after you click on Burn Sisc, it will change to Burn progress.

Thanks for the recognition mi amigo. I try, I promise...

    computerignorant...

Did you right click on the .iso and select "Burn disc image" when you created the disk? Sounds like you may have done a simple copy/paste operation, instead. In Win 7, the right click menu entry to burn must be manually enabled (it doesn't appear until it is enabled). If you didn't see the option when you right clicked the .iso to burn (it appears at the very top of the menu in Win 7), then you more than likely just need to find the "Default Programs" interface in Windows and click on "Windows Disc Image Burner" to add it as the burner for your system. I think if you do a search for "Default Programs" from the charms bar or whereever your search box is, you should be able to hunt down that Windows native interface easily. Definitely, if you can't see the "Burn disc image" on the right click menu when you click on an .iso, then you will need to either enable that feature, use CDBurnerXP, or install another burner program. Procedures for other programs would be run from inside the open program, instead of from the right click menu.

Just checked my XP Pro 32 bit (w/SP3) install disk, and it is listed at 622 MS, which is I think the typical size I am used to. I have another disk around here that is SP2, and I think it's about the same size. I suppose, computerignorant, your .iso is without a Service Pack, so, as mdonah mentioned, that does seem like the appropriate size. Anyway, I have seen them at various sizes that install the same.

I have been burning my .isos using Ashampoo, and it seems to do a good job. I believe the option is something like "Create/Burn Disk Images"->"Burn a CD/DVD/Blu-ray Disc from a Disc Image". I haven't had a single bad experience with Ashampoo.

I used CDBurnerXP many moons ago, but that was with Win XP, and the results were shaky. I couldn't tell if it was the burner, which was a USB external burner, or the program. I would lean toward the burner drive, because there wasn't a driver for it, but it did work a few times somehow. Guess I would go with mdonah's experiences on CDBurnerXP...

I too was wondering if there was some sort of little quirk in Win 8 that could be causing the problem with burning a Win XP .iso. Win XP really is that old, although certainly good enough once installed for many/most uses still today. However, the way you said that you copied the file, causes me to wonder if maybe the file perhaps was not actually burned in a bootable form...instead just moved to the CD/DVD (copy/paste). That would quickly explain why the boot wasn't working...

    OK computerignorant...

Since I happen to be here, I will go ahead and get you going.

Keep in mind that you will not lose any programs or files in this process. However, you will be required to reinstall all of the Windows Updates for XP. I believe SP3 will still be there, so you should be able to get the updates easily (automatically).

First thing to bring up, I am assuming you booted with the installation disk you burned in the tray, and the installation process began. If that is what happened, here is a link to instructions for running a repair installation of Win XP:

    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/instxprepair1.htm

These instructions are in 2 10 part segments. Pay especial attention to segment 1 parts 4-6. Other than that, just follow the procedure. It's fairly simple. You may have to boot a couple of times during the process. Just remember not to "hit any key to boot from CD" (only do this the first time when you first boot to start the process from the disk) when that message comes up during any reboot you may be asked to perform.

Any questions just post them. Should take about 30-40 minutes in all...

As long as you follow the directions from the site AtlBo linked you to, you should be OK. I'm glad you finally got the CD burned and were able to boot from it.

:confused That repair install SHOULD NOT have removed your data files. In the Start Menu, go to Search and enter the name of a file you know and hit enter. See if anything shows up in the results. What do you mean by you "have 30 to give them a certificate number"?

    Thanks for the offer! :)

It must mean Windows Activation. You may need to call Microsoft and give them the Product Key from the sticker. Your sticker is for OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) System Builders' version. It shouldn't be a problem because your version IS, actually, a retail version and not one for Dell, HP and the like.

mdonah...if I type in the name of a song I can get it. how do I find the name of the folder with all my music?

Is the PC booting/running well aside from the files issue? Just wanted to check.

What mdonah said is true about repair installations. A repair installation should not have changed anything about your programs or files. The only two exceptions are:

    1. Windows Updates are removed during a repair installation. These must be re-downloaded and installed using the windows update client of Windows XP or you can just wait on them. You will not be able to reinstall them (Windows won't find them automatically either) if Service Pack 3 is not on the PC, however. You can see in Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs if it is listed in the list. I think it's listed as Windows XP SP3 near the bottom of the list. If it's there, you are ready to download updates.
    2. If you had a modded theme using the U/X patch to use a non-MS theme, you will have to reinstall the U/X patch. Those themes would still be on the PC, just unusable. If you were using one of these before the repair installation, you would see the standard theme after booting following the repair.

About your music. Did you try the My Documents->My Music folder? Not looking at XP, right now, but I think there is a link on the Start Menu to My Documents and maybe even the music folder. Is the music actually playing normally when you click on a song?

If your music is still on the PC, then I am fairly certain the rest of your files are there too.

The location structure of folders in Windows is kind of a mystery that takes a while to understand. It's sort of like Windows presents things like they are in one place, but the computer sees them in a different place. To learn about the folder structure of Windows, I recommend a program called TreeSizeFree. It can be downloaded safely here (don't know why it is not here at MGs for download):

    http://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free/

This program will show you how Windows is actually laid out, helping you understand how MS uses shortcuts for convenience on the desktop and on the start menu for your file folders and other system folders. MS' way is a double edged sword if you haven't given some time to learning the actual folder structure of the program. It does bring convenience, though, once you learn it.

Atlbo....I went to run and typed

    documents and settings\my documents\geary\my music

this is where the music is, but it says I don't have the file.
I can go to search and type in the name of the singer and I get all of the songs of that person. then I have to save as a file. is there a way to make a folder and move all the files into a folder and then play them all at once without having to play one file/song at a time? I want to burn them to a usb stick or on a cd, but not one at a time.

OK...perform search for one of them and then look at the path out to the right when the search finds the song. Type that path in your next post...

In the search results right click and select open folder or go to location. Then once there send to desktop ( makes a shortcut).

Some repair/restore will create a folder like 'winold' or 'Backup" or even 'Nov132014', this could have all your files not only music.

Is there a Windows product key anywhere on the PC? That's the one you use.

Is the PC connected directly to the router using an ethernet cable or are you trying to connect wirelessly?

The Product Key Code will be on the side of the sticker below a barcode in the form of XXXXX-XXX-XXX-XXX. You cant't get on the internet because you may need to re-install your network (ethernet) card driver.

Oh :-o...I somehow had the belief from posts 7-13 that you had a key sticker on the PC. You will absolutely need the key from before the repair install to activate the repaired OS. I am almost positive you will have to call MS for this...

mdonah can probably clear this up. I haven't run into on any PCs here...

I think your best bet with the internet will be to download the driver you will need from the PC manufacturer to the W8 computer you have and then place the file on a flash drive or USB hard drive to be transferred over and installed.

What brand of computer is the XP PC? Please list all the specs about the brand/model number. If the PC is a Dell, the service tag would help...

AtlBo... the only sticker on the computer is the serial number. someone where I used to work built it for me and I don't have a contact number. my son gave me a computer that someone gave him and does not have a sticker of any kind. can I can keep using the xp I burned?

  33. mdonah

    mdonah Major Geek Extraordinaire

You can use the XP install for 30 days without Activation. Are you positive that there is no sticker on the bottom of the XP machine with a series of letters and numbers in the format of XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX?

The Windows 8 machine won't have a product key sticker because it's now embedded in the UEFI (BIOS). It will only have a small sticker that looks like the Windows 8 splash screen.

  34. computerignorant

    computerignorant Private E-2

Mdonah....I am positive. what are the chances it could be inside? I will look tomorrow.

  35. mdonah

    mdonah Major Geek Extraordinaire

The system builder may have placed it under the laptop's battery. You could shut down the XP computer, unplug the power cord and pull the battery and check inside. If there's no sticker there, you'll have no choice but to buy an XP Home CD WITH COA/Product Key. It should be less than $40 US on ebay.

  36. mdonah

    mdonah Major Geek Extraordinaire

    Sorry. :-o

I forgot that your XP machine is a desktop (with 2 optical drives) and not a laptop. OK, see if the sticker is on the inside of the side panel (although, I don't know why your system builder would have placed it there). But, now, without that Product Key, you'll have to buy a CD with one. If you do have to purchase one, make sure it has SP3 included. Otherwise, SP3 will be a 316 MB download that you'd need to install.
