My lovely computer which gives me no grief has suddely started to misbehave. (Win 7 32 bit) It started to lag when I'm editing my pictures with editing software and when I post them on the net. It's giving me this error which makes firefox go all funky so I have to end it's process and start again.

I have updated the driver already. So not sure what the issue is!!!

Does the same error occur in all browsers?

is your graphics card overlocked if it is this error is common as it's telling you its unstable and you need to lower the settings on the graphics card

We don't have a graphics card, it's all onboard APU, but we also suspect it may have "cooked" at some point. No Tim, not bothered trying different browser yet. Will do just to check that but I reckon knowing my luck my mobo or HD is on way out. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

Get a brush and a can of air and clean all inside before you write if off.

Already have. ;) Was FIRST thing to do. And pulled everything out of it's socket...and reseated it just to be sure. And did so EARTHED.

And yes Tim, all browsers crash...

Have you checked your event viewer? Mostly system and application for any major errors?

Have you tried down-grading the video driver? Perhaps the most recent version is not playing nice with your hardware configuration.

I've had that happen before . . . it was an older board though.

Good suggestion! What I DID do last night was run a CHKDSK and I looked in the event viewer after reboot but no chkdsk log showing in that "source" tab at all, nothing anywhere relating to chkdsk, so I'll poke around in there for other errors, see if it gets us any closer to nailing the true issue. Thanks.

Hmm, don't really wanna do this as the computer was being awful before the upgrade too...

I'm scared to death of losing all my Mycophotography!!! Must back up everything today because I really do have the worst luck... :-D

Before doing a video driver install or update, the current driver should be removed / uninstalled, then reboot.
I think it's important to remove all traces before another install.

After the removal, I'd first reinstall the original driver and see how that goes.

If still no good, remove that and then install the new driver.
Are you sure that you have the right one for your hardware ?

Ruled out HD and driver as being at fault. So it's either the CPU or the motherboard...

Have you tried a RevoUninstall of the ATI drivers, and clean installing the new driver?

How about a check of the RAM?

I've seen bad sticks make an OS misbehave.

About the best overall system utility I have used is this:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/ultimate_boot_cd_(ubcd).html

With it you can do memory tests, CPU stress tests, system stess tests, lots of other hardware utilities . . . Pretty sure there is/are some video tests as well. Been a while since I've had to use it, but it's a good place to start when trying to nail down a possible hardware issue. All kinds of good utilities. :)

Takes some getting used to . . . a lot of the utilities don't have intuitive GUIs, but everyone should have this in their toolbox.

More info about it, along with recent additions and changes:

    http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/history.html

I don't doubt there are other good diagnostic utilities here, too.

OK so far after running more tests (excluding artefacts) I don't know my man is doing it all :-D We think it IS bad RAM. Hope so anyway!

Kes, if you do go Mad, please create a new account so we can tell you two apart.

Seriously, I do see that error a LOT on systems. Very common when overclocking new systems. Fairly common with new game installs. Unfortunately I cannot offer any single solution. Sometimes I change resolution, sometimes more cooling, more video card voltage, move the video card slot have all worked. The problem is that the video driver does not know why it crashed.
Usually Furmark will bring up the error more than anything else so I run it a lot for tests.
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/furmark.html
I was hoping Folding would bring up the error but Folding restarts too gracefully and I don't see it.

I think I'm almost insane already!!

Thanks DOA, I'll get my other half to look at this and give furmark a try. The whole thing is driving me nuts. I'm reliant on my computer for so much and it's getting in the way of editing my mushroom pictures. LOL

Attached picture is some chondrostereum purpureum that I mistook for bleeding tooth fungi, but that's another topic completely...

Fella says NO. We don't want to overheat. He says the computer seems to be able to hit 86C just by looking at the 3D BIOS.

Are you saying it is overheating? Can you open the case and point a fan at it?

  21. Kestrel13!

Kestrel13! Super Malware Fighter - Major Dilemma Staff Member

It's over heated in the past, Tim yes. We are currently throttling the CPU to 75% (whatever the hell that means LOL) Until such time as we can afford liquid cooling and a graphics card...

Well, we backed everything up of mine and my other half wiped the whole thing, reinstalled Windows 7 and I had a brand new lovely smoothly running computer for all of about 2 days.........

The dreaded error is back. I am on COMPLETELY different hardware by the way, guys. Apart from my HD, but please let's not all pounce on that yet.

Does this thread belong here in software or in hardware? How the hell would I even know at this point. What am I going to do to have an up and running computer which doesn't keep taking craps on me like this?? Oh I'm beside myself with worry... :cry

This HAS to be a software problem.

  24. DOA

    DOA MG's Loki

You are probably right, but lets be sure.
Take the side or lid off of your case, put a big room fan blowing into and across the insides. It can be a foot or two away, but be sure the fan is blowing hard into the case. This usually masks any heat problems. I am reiterating what Tim suggested....

See if this makes any difference at all.

Is there not any easy way to just monitor the temperatures on the screen?

  26. Kestrel13!

I should also mention I have ONBOARD graphics, so no card...

Kestrel13! Super Malware Fighter - Major Dilemma Staff Member

And.... hate to keep adding but I cannot edit in this forum. I am now using safe mode with networking and am looking at pictures on facebook and looking at a few of mine. I am NOT getting that dreaded error in this mode. This is important information for you to know.

Will do what DOA suggested to tomorrow or later.

Thanks! We actually found that and grabbed it after posting, it does a very good job. What we are currently doing is installing a graphics card we managed to get hold of....

Something just popped in my head. Did you add any hardware to the system, or swap any since the install? I remember having a similar issue with a card swap. I rolled out a Radeon4850 for a 7870. Uninstalled everything, shut down and swapped the card. Installed fresh drivers and software for the upgraded card, and had nothing but trouble. The cure ended up being a full W7 reinstall.

The machine has run flawlessly ever since.

So, does the HDD have an older install of Windows prior to the current hardware, and was originally mapped to the previous hardware?

  33. Kestrel13!

Kestrel13! Super Malware Fighter - Major Dilemma Staff Member

To be honest I cannot remember which of the two drives was the master and the slave before, but both come up clean on scan disk and both were fully formatted before a clean install of Windows.

The CPU has now been throttled to 65%, a graphics card is in...and not had error since. Thermal paste on the way!!! ;)
