This sucks, a group of DDOS attackers called "Lizard Squad" took down Xbox Live the 1st of December. Now again!! This really BLOWS! Xbox Live ain't free either... i think Microsoft isn't taking this so lightly! They've done this also to Sony Playstation Network. http://https://twitter.com/LizardPatrol/status/539594137117667328

Many online games have been hit.
Microsoft is not taking this lightly, but as I was told so many years ago at an NT 3.5 class "Features and ease of administration outsells stability and security". I highly doubt we will stop the DDOS attacks because people will not learn and do what it takes to be secure.

Security doesn't stop you from getting DDOSed.

Brute force is brute force. Something has gotta give.

They aren't hitting an exploit, they are clogging the pipes so to speak.

It isn't as widespread as they want you to believe either. During this entire time, the only issue I saw was it stopped my cousin from purchasing something off of Xbox Live for about 30 minutes. It didn't interrupt anything else.

I watched my router logs fairly often when others here were playing online games. Many ddos attacks showed daily. I always wondered if the router wasn't just picking up many players at one time. It never interferred with my normal net usage going on at the same time? And it (the constant game play) never seemed to contribute to my total gbytes used. Gbyte usage seemed to reflect my real program and video and music and pdf downloads. I think a dedicated port was used for the game network.

I wouldn't trust a consumer router to accurately identify a ddos.

Adry, a DDOS has to come from somewhere. A pervasive secure OS would stop DDOS at its source, but we are wandering off topic.
I think this DDOS was done just because they can.

My point is that they aren't hitting an exploit on Xbox Live.

Any OS can be used to ddos. Heck, one of my coworkers exploited a rather common VoIP phone. He was able to use it to hit web endpoints.

It wasn't even running Windows. Now imagine a large network of them acting as bots.

For MS to stop the ddos to Live, they would likely impact legit users too.

How do you know they aren't using something like that?

The service never once went down. It just suffered disturbances.

Lizard Squad's message of it being offline never truly happened.

Agreed with "they are not using an XBox exploit"
    On to what I said.
    Secure OS's would help.
"Android-based devices can easily fall prey to malicious codes implanted and become zombie devices due to the openness of the operating system."

The more open and easier to remotely administer a system is, the more vulnerable it is. More secure OS's and better app screening would help by producing fewer devices that can be used for a DDOS attack.
